Install and run programs in a virtual sandbox environment without writing to the hard drive.

I find this very useful when trying out programs I download like screensavers. I just install the screen saver through Sandboxie, completely isolated from my computer, and I can erase all track of it afterwards.

Looks interesting as am always downloading software and giving it a run.....with unfavorable results sometimes, this will probably avoid such frustrations...thanks

This program is great! When I use it with firefox I don't get any spyware. Plus all those flash and java exploits won't affect my system unless it can get out of the sandbox. I think this is a must have program for all users.

It will still download them but it will be downloaded in a Sandboxed Environment.
This means they will not be able to interact with the system and they can be easily
deleted by going to Sandboxie --> Delete all contents

No not really.....but say if you install a program through Sandboxie, you can still run the program.

Here is an example:

Installing normally.

C:\Windows\Regedit adding registry keys
C:\Windows\System32\ adding system files
C:\Program Files\ adding program files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop\ adding shortcuts

Installing sandboxed.

C:\Sandbox\user\DefaultBox\RegHive adding registry keys
C:\Sandbox\user\DefaultBox\Drive\C\Windows\System32\ adding system files
C:\Sandbox\user\DefaultBox\Drive\C\Program Files\ adding program files
C:\Sandbox\user\DefaultBox\username\Current\Desktop\ adding shortcuts

Everything is contained in the Sandbox and not mixed with your system.

Thx - definitely looks worth checking out.

I am often hesitant to try new utilities, in particular, but this should help with evaluation tests and prevent leaving crap behind after uninstall.

Looks good so far, reading the tutorial.

Yep, it's good for trying out new software.

Carbon - I have run stuff thru Sandboxie just fine - love it but - right now I am a bit unsure as to how you install an app' - for a test run let's say.

If I have a ''someappsetup.exe'', already stored as against just downloaded from browser let's say - and want to install into Sandboxie - what is way to go? Do we need to place the setup file within Sandboxie folder - or instruct install to put prog in that location?

I am probably missing something simple!

OK - next question (sorry!) ...... tried this out and selected "run sandboxed" ....... the install suggested the usual C:\Program Files - carried on and install went thru to finish.

But ----- where is the prog! No evidence of it anywhere and again I must be forgetting something!!! The system tray icon shows empty - no red spots.

Right Click the Sandboxie Icon in the System Tray and click Explore Contents.
Now make your way into Program Files. It should be something like:
C:\Sandbox\user\DefaultBox\drive\C\Program Files

Look for the installed program and you can run it from there.

Thx carbon - turns out (yeah - duh!) I hadn't dug deep enough to expand everything ..... did find in the end the list of files.

I guess I had erroneously expected to see a desktop shortcut to the app and it wasn't there - other than in the Sanboxie listings.

I succeeded anyways in running the exe from Sandboxie and so have gotten success.

Carbon - one more question - hopefully my last!!

When using "run sandboxed" to do an install - does this set up in a new sandbox? or - do you request a new sandbox first from the Sandboxie control window? I currently have on desktop my sandboxed browser and last trial install I did I cleared all files after use.

I am thinking here - if I want to test run more than one app - and keep them operational for a while - then I should have one sandbox per item - yeah or not? ... and how best to achieve that.

I haven't experimented with multiple Sandboxes but in the Sandboxie Window under Sandbox, you can Create New Sandbox.
Time for you to do some experimenting of your own.

Hi, I have a question. I already have a trial program installed on my computer that is expired. I re-downloaded it and installed it in sandboxie, but it was still expired. Sandboxie looks like it has all of the C disk sandboxed in default box. Is this why the trial software is still expired? Is there a way to make it not sandbox the file that is telling the trial software it is expired?

When you run the Trial in the Sandbox, it registers itself in the virtual Registry INSIDE the sandbox. (it makes a copy of your current registry).

In case no one already mentioned this:
A program like this cannot prevent viruses. Some well built viruses will leave their memory areas, heck, some viruses can be activated by copying/pasting the file which their code is contained.
From there, they spread and dont stop.

I'm not using explorer.exe as a shell. The shell i am using is modular so the only components i am using are the core and the virtual desktop manager. I've been like this for a while and have had no need for a system tray... except for sandboxie.

I did try to install YODM3D aswell and that didn't like the fact that i didn't have a sytem tray, turns out YODM3D is abit poop anyway, so i uninstalled it.
