Something is dying in my desktop?

My mouse fails to work half the time. I can't click the user to log on to when I get to the login screen (Windows XP), my computer freezes on startup until I hit something on my keyboard, I can't drag and drop, and lastly, whenever I open a program, it freezes and I can't click anything on it until I hit alt+tab or something.

- Not my mouse because I tried multiple mouses.
- Not my usb ports because I tried different ports (unless they ALL died)...
- Not a virus because it didn't work before AND after reformatting.

So maybe sometime is dying on my desktop? It is a couple years old...

No unconfigured devices, no PS/2 port, USB ports work with other devices, updating chipset and re-inserting the CMOS battery doesn't work =(

Does it boot up and run ok in safe mode?

Have you done the following: checked for spyware, viruses/Deleted Temp files, cookies/ defrag harddrive, checked for bad sectors?

When did you format the hard drive and how old is this drive? Is it SATA or IDE?

It runs fine without safe mode, it freezes but after random keyboard presses, it unfreezes, but I still cannot click anything.

Definately nothing wrong in terms of software because I completely formmated the partition and then put XP on it. Checked for bad sectors but nothing.

I think it's SATA.

Well that doesn't look like it runs fine to me. So you haven't tried safe mode like I suggested

So you haven't installed any drivers or software apart from xp? Sorry but I cannot eliminate things when your not prepared to try them. Safemode would of told me if it was a Software, Driver or hardware fault.

Since I reformmated, of course I installed all the drivers

Upon starting up safe mode, I was brought to the login screen, in which I can either choose "Administrator" or "Giga", I can't click either one, I can click and highlight them but not enter them. I was able to get in with the keyboard (arrows and enter) however.

In safe mode, I was ALSO not able to drag any icons on my screen. I was also unable to move things from one folder to the next.

You will need to try a ps/2 mouse plugged into the ps/2 port instead of a usb one. Make sure you disconnect the usb mouse when trying this!! If the problem persists and you have a printer or scanner. Disconnect these also and continue to try the ps/2 mouse.

As of right now, nothing besides the USB mouse and wireless adapter is plugged in...and of course the keyboard. There are no PS/2 ports.

What you mean no Ps/2? What is this motherboard? Ruling out the usb would be a good start!!

I have a dell dimension 9100, as far as I know and see, there is no ps/2 ports for the mouse, only usb ports.

I'm well aware of what a PS/2 port is, I'm just stating that I don't have one.

Any other ideas?

Shutdown computer and unplug your keyboard and all other usb devices except for the mouse. Now boot up the computer to see if the mouse works ok. If it doesn’t, shutdown computer again and leave all other usb devices disconnected. Now plug the mouse into the usb port that had the keyboard was in. Boot and let us know what happens!!

Yeah Dell have gotten into this fustrating habit of cutting stuff out of their motherboards, like a Dell machine I got I sent back as it did not have a LPT port for my beloved printer, instead coming with a whopping 10 USB ports (8 rear, 2 front)

Anyway I noticed you said "Wireless Adapter" that just spells trouble. Check the batteries in your mouse and move the receiver to a different port.

Though you did say you tried many mice, did they all happen to be wireless?
