    internet lag??
    « on: May 28, 2008, 10:08:51 PM »
when i click links or roam the web, i have about 15 seconds of "nothing" happening?

i just changed routers to from a Netgear to a Netgear wireless router. WGR614v9 to be exact.

i called netgear about this and their only solution was to send me a new one.

i have 3 computers connected to this router.  2 hard wired (the other one is fine) and i wireless.

my 'test' page is espn.com.  i navigate to it either from favorites or type it in.  it usually takes about 15 seconds to begin downloading the page information and about 30-45 seconds total (at least)

    any ideas?

i have SBCglobal DSL and a 2 wire modem...  when the modem is connected directly to the puter, it works fine!  this just began when i added this wireless router.

    is my XP failing me?

    help?

It looks more like router issue. Did you try to power cycle it?
Only one computer is having a problem?

      thanks for the prompt reply!

i power cycled the router per netgear CS's advice...

i have changed ports on the back of the router...  only my computer has this problem.... not the family one and not the wireless connection

I'm assuming, you're using Internet Explorer? Did you try Firefox?
      Also....
      Go Start>Run, type in:
      cmd
      Click OK.

      At Command Prompt, type in:
      ping www.google.com
      Hit Enter.

Copy results, and post them back here.

        Ping looks normal.

Download, and install TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click Apply changes button.
Restart computer, and see if it helped.

             :( Broni...........

            no change.

i just don't get why it takes about 30 seconds for a page to realize that i clicked a link for recognize something.  i watch my router and watch when it starts blinking it starts to work...  it just sits there for a little bit THEN it says "ok, i'm ready now" and transfers the data.........  its fustrating!

That's a good idea.  Try a different Ethernet cable between your computer and the router, and see what happens...

anybody?  any other ideas..............?   i know my computer is a little on the old side, but nothing like this has happened before........

seeing as though other computers work fine with this router,  is my computer in need of certain setting to be compatable with this router?

As Broni mentioned your ping does look good I was expecting to see lost packets which would of explained a lot. How is your network setup. Explain or make a picture of how this computer is connected to any network devices and how it gets out of your house onto the Internet.

Also could you do a traceroute for me.. click Start/Run type cmd press enter.

                  At the command prompt type:

                  tracert google.com

                  and post me the results.

i am not on the current computer but i will send you my results the second i arrive home.

                    my networking looks like this.

modem, router on my desk... family computer with a 60ft. cord about 15 feet away in next room.
the router is connected to the modem which is SBCglobal yahoo! DSL to my knowledge...  its a weak means of broadband, but i'm not paying for it, so i dont complain.

the internet goes through the phone line.

is there someway that the new router needs to configure with my computer???  when i was on tech support with Netgear, the guy had me connect the modem to my computer directly and there was NO problem.  it was just like old...

thanks for the help   : /

Did he explain anything?  If the connection between your DSL modem and computer (direct) works well, then the problem is something in the router.

Traceroute looks good and if you've tried another computer on the same connection connected to the same port on the router and it worked fine I'd have to agree with you that maybe it is something to do with the computer and not the connection.

Have you tried downloading and updating the drivers for your network card on the computer. Maybe you've got an issue with the drivers on the computer.

If you add the router to the modem (without the 60ft cables or other cables you were using) does it still go fast?

I'd try to get new ethernet card driver (uninstall current one). If that doesn't work, I'd buy a new card ($15).

                                Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

certain websites such as this one and google, work super quick....  others like majorgeeks, espn, and more take what seems like dial-up forever!

Unfortunately, you'll have to open your computer case, and look at your ethernet card.
                                    Here, it explains why: http://www.cnet.com.tw/download/pro200wl.htm
After you identify P/N number, download appropriate driver, and leave it alone.

                                    Go Start>Run, type in:
                                    devmgmt.msc
                                    Click OK.

In Device Manager, go to Network Adapters, right click on CNet FAST200WL PCI Wake On LAN Fast Ethernet Adapter, click Properties, then Driver tab.
                                    Click on Uninstall button.
After uninstall is completed, go to freshly downloaded file, unzip it, and double click on setup.exe file to began installation.

                                    P. S. This is very old product, so all the above procedure may have no positive effects.

i did this last night and NO change.......  guess it has to be the router.

why is netgear making ME pay to ship the product because its defective?
is there any way around this?????????

I'd try new ethernet card, first, since yours is rather ancient one.
