This issue first started when we downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the desktop, ran the first scan, and cleaned all the infected files. I'm thinking maybe we deleted something that was very vital for the internet's connection. But, on my laptop, when I did the same thing with it, meaning run the Malwarebyte scan and delete the files, nothing ruined my internet connection.

It's a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition version. Um, the model is HP Pavilion a265c.

There's only ONE account set on the desktop, and that says owner.

I cannot access the VIEW SYSTEM INFORMATION link in My Computer because the infection had created RESTRICTIONS on the computer.

Here's some other information about the desktop. Hopefully it will prove helpful.

Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology.

    512 MB DDR SDRAM memory.

160 GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive 7200 RPM

Everytime at startup, after the malwarebyte scan incident, an error message appears. It says : "C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe" "Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

Also, another message usually pops up and will flood the whole desktop screen because the messages appear two at a time, and they are usually a minute apart. This message says : "Application Error: Exception GIFException in module aviWUSB54GC.dll at 000252AF."

On our router, which is a 2wire Gateway provided by AT&T, there are 5 lights, but only 4 of them are on [ it's always been that way and the internet worked like that ]. The lights that are on are POWER, WIRELESS, DSL, and INTERNET. I noticed that after removing the infections on the comp, the WIRELESS light picked up a habit of CONTINUOUSLY blinking. It wasn't like that before.

On NETWORK CONNECTIONS, the LAN or HIGH-SPEED INTERNET section says

    Local Area Connection 3
    Network cable unplugged
    Realteck RTL8139 Family PCI
    Fast Ethernet NIC

    Wireless network Connection 4
    Wireless connection unavailable

With Local Area Connection 3 and Wireless Network Connection 4 there is a big red X on it.

To have the internet running on the desktop, we have a Compact Wireless-G USB Adaptor plugged in the back and a light flashes on it.

If there's more information that you may need, I'll try to provide it as best as I can.

    =)

    Please help.
