I know there are free programs out there on the internet to shut the computer down at/after a certain time but as for Command Prompt, the only thing I could think of is:

shutdown -s -t "300"
This will shut off the computer in 5 minutes (300 seconds) but it won't run in the background.

A little unclear...

Do you mean:
Shut down at a particular time and not turn back on?

-OR-

Shut down at a particular time and turn back on later?

Unless you have something outside the computer (like a piece of hardware) to interrupt the boot process, I don't see any way to stop the computer from booting.

There are many free programs out there on the internet that will allow you to do this. One program I have found useful (and still do) is Kana Reminder. You can set it to turn the computer off at a specific time.

i know about the shutdown command long back i.e.,
it is visible to everyone  but i want it to be run in the background
       "shutdown -s -t sec's" & shutdown -r -t sec's are the most popular commands
any way thanks for giving information about the remainder..
 it's very nice
 once again thank you....................................

I am one of those looking at a post and not replying.  I like to learn from other peoples problems and learn as much as possible before I jump into a forum.  There is so much information to learn about computers and so little time.  I don't mind watching and learning from the peanut gallery.  Great site!  Keep up the great work!  All of us newbies need lots of guidance!
