transferring info from broken computer to new one
« on: July 25, 2008, 01:35:49 PM »
I have a HP computer that won't turn on. I know that it is the power source. Instead of fixing it for the 3rd time I bought a new one. How can I get stuff (mainly photos) off of the old one w/o fixing it? Thanks, Jodi

Remove HD and install it into a bare external Hard drive case... Then you just plug in the power and usb cable and you should have all your data.

    Like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092+1053807123&name=3.5%22

Be sure to match your drive type (IDE or SATA) and size (probably 3.5, if from a desktop) to the external enclosure.

I've heard that Radio Shack carries the ext enclosures.
If you don't have time to do it right

    Yep, $20 for IDE, $25 for IDE/SATA

It can also be installed as a slave drive in another machine without having to buy an enclosure...
Personally when trying to recover data i don't trust an external solution nor a USB connection.
