    Yahoo browser won't stay open
    « on: July 11, 2008, 11:45:29 PM »
I have Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 on an old E-Machine.  Intel Celeron CPU 2.30 GHz  2.29GHz 512 RAM.  Kaspersky and Spybot virus protection and System Mechanic to keep my puter clean and running well.  I can only get ATT Yahoo dial up because I am too far from a substation for the wireless.  I have for the past 5 months borrowed wireless from a neighbor who gets the local cable company's service (yeah, he knows it and keeps it unsecure to share).  I run a Linksys Wireless G USB adaptor to the window near his house to share the wireless.  This has worked perfectly (we are far enough away from anyone else to access his router, too) til yesterday.  I have hotkeys on the keyboard where when I pick up his signal all I do is hit the internet or email button and yahoo opens and I am off and rolling.  Last night I tried to get on and the yahoo browser came up as usual but immediately said no internet connection and closed.  My wireless was running at 18MB which is plenty for me and said connected when I moved the curser over it.  I updated and ran both the Kaspersky and spybot and then cleaned my puter No viruses detected) with the system mechanic as I do 3 times a week.  I checked to be sure the homepage had not been modified so Yahoo wouldn't open.  All seems ok but for some reason out of the blue I can only use the dialup garbage.  Any clues on something I may be missing or where to even start troubleshooting this problem?  I have a home job starting transcribing and need the wireless BAD :'(

What about Internet Explorer? Does it work?

I have IE blocked through Kaspersky because it was connected to a bunch of viruses several months ago (Smitfraud, gomyhit) and I was tired of waging war back and forth so the last time I killed them I just blocked IE and don't use it.  I have downloaded Firefox but don't use it much.  Yahoo was all I needed-well til today- now I have to open IE for some work I have to do at home.  So, anyways, I didn't check it but I did check Firefox and the same thing happened.  This morning we got up and it is again working fine.  Not sure what was going on but if you have a clue I'd still like the help incase it does it again.

It is possible those virus are causing chaos within your computer.

If you would like to remove them (I would), look here:

Did you check with your neighbor to see if his internet connection worked while yours didn't?

And, just a suggestion - why not have your neighbor encrypt the wireless and give you the key?

Hey, thanks for the quick replies.  First, I am planning on aggressively cleaning out any lingering viruses when I have time (I work 2 jobs) and as long as IE stays blocked most of the time I don't have a lot of trouble.  Second,  if I was to go to the neighbor who's brain isn't all that large and even mention the word encrypt he'd wonder at what cemetary we would do it !!  He mostly hasn't done anything with his connection because he is completely clueless on how to anyways.  I did find out what happened by snooping around so I thought I would close this for anyone else with the problem.  As I said, I have Kaspersky and Spybot.  The Kaspersky is the full paid for version and pretty aggressive when it comes to a firewall.  The Spybot is a free download and candy coats its firewall with the cute little word "teatimer".  Who would have guessed.  Apparantly it was the aggressive Kaspersky updating and his bad boy firewall was just beating the crap out of the wittle teatimer which was just a major conflict.  24 hours later I got rid of the teatimer when I was desperately looking for a solution  (At the time I thought that maybe someone else was using the puter here and may have just blocked the browser when the pop came up asking if to allow or to deny access not knowing what they were doing.  I'm the only one in the house who knows their way around in there and handles it all.)  But apparently by shutting down the teatimer the firewalls no longer were in conflict and Kaspersky won the fight.  All is ok right now and thanks again for the ideas. One the side- The neighbor has never had trouble with his online going down.  For what he pays he shouldn't!!
