internet says connected... however it's not.
    « on: July 24, 2008, 10:11:19 PM »
amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ running windows xp

has a msi wireless g turbo card (pci)

had zonealarm but got rid of it after reading about it's problems from the 9th of july.  I have a laptop and another computer that are connecting to the internet with no problems.... however my main desktop isn't.  It says i'm connected with very good signal.... but no internet.  I've pinged www.google.com and my laptop with no apparent problems.  I've deleted and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless card.  It seems to be sending packets just fine but is having problems receiving them.  Majority of frames received have crc errors.  I have also tried registry cleaners, virus checkers, and spyware checkers.  I did a system restore back to july 1st when I know my internet was working.  I was on vacation for a couple weeks and was having problems a couple days before i left.  I couple people were messing with it while I was gone trying to figure this out also.  Any clues will be appreciated.

    Thanks

I just ran a network diagnostic for windows xp and at the bottom it says HTTPS error 12057 connecting to www.microsoft.com and www.passport.com followed by could not make an HTTPS connection.  Any clues?

If you can ping google, it's probably a browser problem.  Try a different browser to make sure.

What browser are you using? Did you try another browser?

I've tried it on my main browser (firefox) and ie7.  I think someone deleted some of my windows network settings or something.  my home page is www.google.com and it doesn't load even though it pings through.

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
            Power them back on.
            Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

            If that doesn't work...
            Go Start>Run, type in:
            cmd
            Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
            ipconfig /flushdns
            ipconfig /registerdns
            ipconfig /release
            ipconfig /renew

            Restart computer.

            If that doesn't work...
            Go Start>Run, type in:
            cmd
            Click OK.

            At Command Prompt, type in:
            netsh int ip reset reset.log
            Hit Enter.
            Type in:
            netsh winsock reset catalog
            Hit Enter.

            Restart computer.

            If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
            If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
            Restart computer, and check again.

ok i've done everything except the downloads and still nothing.  I'm sending lots of information but hardly getting anything back.  My limewire seems to work just fine however no web pages are working and my world of warcraft isn't either.  I'm gonna try the downloads and repost after.

What happens when you hardwire laptop straight to the modem, bypassing router?

wirelessly with an msi wireless - g card.  It says it's connected with very good signal strength but i can't connect to the internet.  I can with limewire though.  But with nothing else.  I'm only using the windows firewall and i've set it to allow firefox and ie7, but they can't connect.

Hardwire it straight to the modem.
Sometimes, when router is going south, this is what happens.

i'm not using a modem..... i'm connecting to a wi-fi signal with a wireless card.  The laptop i'm using is doing the same with no problems and my other computer in my daughter's room too.  we have three computers with the same setup and only my main desktop is having problems.  It started with the windows update that messed up zone alarms back on july 9th.  I read up on the update and decided to get rid of zone alarms all together.  But now I still can't access the web.

I'd also try to reinstall the latest ZA version (disable Windows firewall, if this is what you're using), and see, if this will fix the problem.

either a neighbor or the business park nearby.  And I can't seem to find my zonealarm disk that i had or my windows xp disk.  Go figure huh.  Is there a way that you can try to connect with my computer and see if you can find anything wrong with it?

Not really, but we're having an issue of stealing someone else's internet connection, so I don't think, I can help you anymore.
It's most likely against this board rules.

I do have a question though.  i live a block away from a starbucks and a library in the other direction.  both have wi-fi hot spots.  If i'm connecting to either of them from my house.... is it any different from taking my laptop down there to connect?

ok... another question.  I just went to add/remove programs - add/remove windows components - internet information services and clicked world wide web services and tried to continue but since i don't have my xp disk i can't.  Could this possibly be an issue?

Those are probably internet connection offers from different companies. It usually comes preinstalled on computers.
