    dvd compatibility

Not sure about this one.  Run Windows NT with very propriatary software...that's the reason I haven't upgraded.  In the old days of plug and play I could run out and buy a dvd burner and away we went.  Now all of the burners I have been looking at don't list nt as an operating system...I'm not interested in nero etc because I run my own software so won't my system just recognize the new device and just take off?  The computer should just see the new device right?

    Are you running NT4?

If so you will need some software package to support burning media since it is not bundled with the OS as a feature.

If running Windows XP, it is bundled to burn media, given as long as the OS supports the chipset internal to the drive to initialize its burning features, otherwise install the software that came bundled with the drive.

Right NT 4.  Am running a burning software called Cheeta DVD burner...works great.  Am just trying to buy new dvd burner.  Last one I put in worked right off the bat, but now all of the new ones indicate they don't support nt4...I am thinking since this is just hardware, my machine will see it on boot and my Cheeta software will work with it.  Am just checking to see if I am correct in my thinking before I buy new dvd.
      Thanks

Do they specifically exclude NT or just don't mention it?

My bet is that your NT will supply the drivers for the new DVD. To hedge that bet, I would: contact the manufacturer of the drive that I wanted to purchase (preferred) or purchase through a supplier that I knew would take it back with full refund if it didn't work. Ok, number 3, contact a reputable supplier, e.g., Newegg, and ask them if the drive you want is compatible with your OS.

        Good luck!
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?
