XBOX (not 360)
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:15:00 AM »
Ok. I have absolutely no idea what to put down except that my XBOX 1 no longer recognizes XBOX Games. It can read audio CD's fine.

It's not the game itself because none of them work.

What should I do......  ???

The first thing I would try is taking the drive out of another xbox and putting it in yours.  I've had that problem in the past and that fixed it.  If you have your pick, I believe the Phillips drives are the best.

You'll need torx screwdrivers, I believe a 10 and a 20.  You'll find 6 screws on the bottom.  4 are under the feet and 2 are under stickers at the front middle and back middle.  With those out, the top will slide straight up and off.  There will be 2 or 3 smaller torx screws holding the drive in.  If you've ever been inside a computer, the inside of the xbox won't be too foreign.

Ooh, thanks. In fact, I think I might have a torx screwdriver somewhere.

So, if I get a new Hard Drive, what would I have to do with it before I put it in?

No, I'm sorry, I meant the DVD drive.  If you've got one of the Toshibas they tend to go bad.  The Phillips will last forever, though.

If you wanted a new hard drive then you've got a lot more work to do.  You'll have to flash the bios, unlock the old HDD, and lock the new HDD with the eeprom code from the old one.  If you want more info on that let me know, but for the not reading games problem it's just as simple as switching the DVD drives.

PS the Torx sizes are 10 and 20, not 10 and 15.  Sorry.

        Thanks for the help, James.
I'll try this out as soon as I can. I've got plenty of spare DVD Drive laying around.
If I don't have the tools, I will need to go to the hardware store tomorrow. (8:30pm now).

I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, let me know.   Do you have xbox drives laying around, though?  I think a regular drive would work theoretically but although the xbox drive is IDE, it doesn't have the regular Molex power connector so I think it has to be another Xbox drive that you put in.

Ah, I found this guide here:
          http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/open1.php

This will help. Now time to look for the screwdrivers...

All right, my DVD Drive is out.

I'm going to take it to my friend at the computer store and see if he has one.

Again, I appreciate the help.  :)

Probably if it weren't for you, I would still think there is a problem with the HD.
          Why didn't I think of the CD/DVD Drive....  :-X

No problem.  A good place to look is places like ebay.  Xboxes are always having fried power supplies and motherboards.  You can usually get one of these fried systems for cheap and the DVD drive usually still works.

I took it to the store and they are going to check with their supplier.
So. I decided to go digging for my own.
I have concluded that it is a problem with the laser in the CD Drive.
In fact, I was messing with it and now.....IT WORKS:
            http://www.fileupyours.com/view/197551/MOV02420.MPG
            (8mb)

If you watch the video, it's pretty cool.
I removed the case of the CD Drive and hooked it up.  ;D

            Pretty dangerous I know...
