Windows 98 s.e. install?
« on: July 28, 2008, 03:13:03 PM »
I am installing windows 98 s.e. on old computer for access giveaway. My question deals with a messsage that pops up when I try to boot up to 98 s.e. and get this message. Quit one or more memory resident programs. Insufficient memory to initialize windows, remove unnecessary utilities from config.sys and auotexec.bat files?? I cannot not bootup to 98 s.e. and finish the o/s installation?? Need help on what to do next??

I assume that there is memory installed in the computer. Shut the computer down, unplug from the wall socket, ground yourself and remove and re-seat the memory.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

      1.  System RAM.  How much system RAM is installed in the machine (in MegaBytes or GigaBytes)?

      2.  What type of installation media did you use?
           a.  Microsoft "Retail" Installation CD, OEM Installation CD, or something else?
           b.  Upgrade or Full Installation CD?

      3.  What kind of installation are you performing?
           a.  Clean Install:  Installation to clean empty hard drive.
           b.  Upgrade Install:  Install over an existing operating system.

      4.  How did you initiate the installation?
           a.  From a Windows 98 SE startup disk (floppy) boot.
           b.  From an existing operating system on the hard drive.

      5.  At what point during the installation did these messages first appear?

      6.  Autoexec.bat and Config.sys:  "Post" the contents of these files.

Are you working on this computer to give it away? If so, are you aware that any information that you have/had on the hard drive is potentially recoverable unless you have securely 'wiped' the hdd?

May not be an issue for you but wanted to point it out.
