    Monitor issues
    « on: August 04, 2008, 08:05:25 AM »
I have recently been having issues with a monitor of mine on a certain Gateway PC.

While I am unsure of the exact type, I know it is a gateway PC and monitor that run on Windows XP.

Lately the monitor's power light has just been blinking on and off, and the screen has remained black except occasional flashes to the main desktop.

Does anyone know what this could be?

When the screen goes blank, can you still see Windows XP if you hold it to a light?

What happened before the problem (hardware and software)?

Can you make sure the connections between the monitor and the computer are steady.

Also, if you can, try the current monitor on another computer
      OR
Try another monitor on the current computer.

To my knowledge, nothing happened before the problem. The computer was running completely fine.

I have unplugged and plugged the monitor back into the computer, that didn't change anything.

And what about my other suggestion.

It will help determine whether it is a problem with the Computer or the Monitor.

what???  Does the monitor work with another pc?  There are no xp made monitors.  If doing so works mite be the video card.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

Well I'm saying the operating system on the computer is XP.

The only computer I have is a laptop which I'm using now, and it doesn't seem to really have any monitor inputs...so I don't really know else I could test it.

Are you sure that the laptop doesn't have one of these:

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

                  My laptop doesnt have one.

But i found an old monitor to use, and I tried it out, the screen just remained completely blank.

                  So, no luck there.

Well, assuming the 2nd monitor was good, and used a separate data cable, sounds like a video problem with the computer. Does the computer have a video card or does it use onboard video?

In either case, you'll need to add a separate video card.

If you need help determining what type of video card to get, post back with your exact Gateway model number.

EDIT: I knew this wasn't right when I wrote it ::) If you have onboard video but have been using a discrete video card, then remove the video card and try the onboard video.
