I use it quite often for entries in logs that I can't find any information on. There are other good ones as well. Here are just a few.

So you upload a file to VirusTotal and it determines if it is infected or not?

    yup, ive been there before. i had these random .dll viruses  that used rundll32.exe to run and make my internet slow. i found them all and let my anti virus after it so i really like that site

      I guess the only drawback to these programs is if you send them something with sensitive information. You don't really know who's looking at the data.
