Think zero is distracting from Zylstra's CH IRC channel prototype so moving him back into his confined space of the #zero channel.

Darn.  :(

I'm in the process of testing out what I hope will become the final solution for chat on Computer Hope (been through a lot of different chat systems and IRC channels ;) )

I haven't implemented it into the forums yet, because still testing out the interface before I start integrating it into the forums. However, it looks real promising. I'm primarily happy with the fact that your forum login would be the same as the chat log in and if you're already logged in on the forums you'll be immediately logged in. For now the link to this test chat is the below link.

But wh is no one ever online??? I tnink you should embed a social chat, into the computerhope forum homepage. Like a horizontal one across the top. So we can chat when we're viewing the forums.....

Since Nathan is out of town at this time, I decided to host this at my server for now.

You can see a list of the available web IRC clients here:
        http://ZylstraBlog.co.nr/CHIRC/

Its quite simple, select the chat you would like, (I recommend that all of you try each individual chat), and choose the best one for you.

If a chat doesn't work, record any error messages, your operating system, and browser, and reply here. Feel free to comment.

        Admin edit.

Just an update, testing out a potential chat that will integrate with the Computer Hope forums. Click the below link to test this out.

        Sorry, didn't ssee that.

It would be nice if you could use your own client though. Thats what I really dont like about web chats.
There is an IRC modification for SMF that will assign your NickName like the webchat will. It uses PJIRC, which does require Java, and you can use your own client.
(Sorry if I seem to be very against web chats... I just never liked having a single locked interface.)

That's no problem, everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. I mainly went with this option because I really liked how it interfaced with the forums. Doing chat on IRC always gave the impression to me as if it were a different community. In addition I'd imagine more people would have an easier time interfacing with the chat through browser window instead of downloading, installing, opening, and connecting to an IRC channel. I do however understand how it's so much easier to connect to an IRC channel if it's something you're already doing and do a lot.

Is it possible to at least install a more basic theme?
Or at least connect your own client? The interface is really just killing me. (I find it extremely hard on the eyes when one has a headache)

Yeah for sure. I completely agree. Let me get all the forum stuff done first then I'll worry about all the chat stuff that wants to be done. On a side note for those who may not be aware the look of the chat can be changed through options and will be saved for the next time you log into it.

Things that might want to be added:
        • Personal chats CAN be seen by Moderators in the logs. (Add this to a welcome message)
        • Disable the ability to allow users to create their own "rooms" (Makes moderation easier)
        • More basic theme, or even one that matches the forums a bit better. The built in themes are hard on the eyes.
        • Disable file transfer
        • AI or regular moderation bot
        • Make chat open in new, smaller window? (It takes up the entire window right now)
        • If there are clients for FlashChat available, post links to them, and possibly even see if Zer0 can be integrated into such a client.

The whole point of a PM, is for it to be a PRIVATE message. So that would just destroy the whole privacy thing. In which case, no one would want to PM knowing that there "Private" messages are being read. That would not be a good idea at all. I completely disagree with it!

I would have to agree with Mr Google on this one. (pm)
