    Ipod not working :(
    « on: August 19, 2008, 11:24:08 PM »
    Hey

Alright, so this is a problem that's really bugging me. I just bought a 5th generation Ipod off ebay, and it started off working fine, but now it's stuck! This is the first day that i've had it, so i hadn't really got to use it, but the different menus came up, it seemed fine.

So, i had been charging it over night, and i woke up in the middle of the night and decided to check on it. I went to my computer and i moved the click wheel, but the light didn't come on, so i unplugged it and took it to a light source. It had been charging, and didn't appear as plugged in on the computer, so it shouldn't have hurt it to unplug it. When i got it over to the light it suddenly came on after i had tried enroute without success. It appeared fine, still not fully charged, so i tried to turn it off and take it back over to the computer, but it didn't turn off, and appeared slow in other things like volume control.

When i plugged it into the computer is where things really messed up. The entire computer just slowed down, i couldn't bring itunes up and process manager had services.exe at 80% with the other 20% on ipodservice.exe. So i restarted the computer with the ipod still plugged in, but it wouldn't start up with the ipod in so i unplugged it.

That brings me to now. The ipod still has the do not disconnect screen up after i disconnected it, the computer obviously started up. Whenever i plug it in the "removable disk" only appears for a second in my computer and doesn't show up in itunes at all. I've tried reseting it by holding the middle button and menu, but it jsut stays on the do not disconnect screen. Also, for some reason services.exe and ipodservice.exe are now taking up 100% again after the computer's been on for 30mins.

I don't know what to do, everyone elses problems always fix with the reset, or the ipod still works with the computer for them to do more. Mine doesn't. Any ideas?

Did you buy this iPod used and/or from China?  You can't be too trusting when purchasing on eBay.  What's the seller's return policy?

They're from the United States. They've been registered since 2002 with feedback of 12210 at 99.2%. Currently, though, they're "No longer a registered user", and even their most recent items having sold on Aug 18 appear as "Invalid" and "Unavailable" so i can't see return policy. Nor would that really help with them no longer being registered.

      Edit: Yes it's used

The fact that it's used makes me wonder if it is faulty.  Someone might know of a workaround, but until getting any suggestions in regards to fixing it, I would suggest contacting eBay and explaining your situation to them.

Not to say that it isn't possible for Anythingwill to have bought a defective iPod, but I buy almost everything on eBay and haven't had problems with anything so far.  I even bought my 5th generation iPod on eBay and have had no problems with it.

In my opinion, Ipod = Trouble.

Well, i've emailed the guy, see what happens.

This morning i woke up to the battery being dead, so then i was able to mess around with it on the computer. I tried to restore and i got an error, and i tried to fix it with the advice for that but it didn't work. I tried reformatting and it didn't work, didn't do too much with that.

Also, the ipod is apparently on hold, and it won't let me take it off hold. I was definately able to use it before hand, which is really weird.

I think i'm just going to buy another one, and if this one ends up working i'll sell it, and if not, i'll get my money back. I just don't know if i should go with ebay again and get a used one that i have to wait a couple weeks for. I could just go to walmart and get a new one right now, it'll just cost me like $40 more...

anythingwill, you may not have a faulty ipod.

Have you tried restarting it?  Just press and hold the center button and the menu buttons at the same time (hold for 5-10 seconds).  You should then see the apple logo appear and it will reboot.

I would try just a reboot, and if that doesn't work, try restoring the ipod and making sure the software is up to date (in iTunes) before going back to the seller, otherwise you run the risk of going through the hassle to return a perfectly good iPod.

I can't reset it because of the hold switch. Unless it's still suppose to work when on hold in which case... well... it's not working.
I've also tried restoring it a few times, but i just get an error message that it can't do it.

Hold Switch? Can't you switch it off? (it should be on the top of the Ipod)

What do you mean you can't switch the hold switch off?  Is it physically stuck in the hold position?

No, when i move it nothing happens. On screen it still shows the little lock to say that hold is on

(and before you start wondering, i only see the menu with the little lock because it comes on when you plug it in. I, of course, can't turn it on with the hold switch messed up)

I'm not knocking eBay or anything; I've purchased plenty of things there (my username is mrfoodmonsterman if you're interested) and for the most part, I have been pleased with my purchases.  But I have received a few shoddy things, and it's always important to be careful when bidding on used items.  I can't say whether or not this iPod is actually faulty; that simply sounds like a strong possibility to me.
