I'm not an expert in this area so i was wandering: presumably the quick format only released the memory to be written over (like it does when you delete something) rather than a full format which would have rejigged the filesystem - erasing all data?

    Next time google it.

    Just to let you know:
It took about 4 1/2 hours to read the drive, and then about 12 or 13 hours to actually pull the info out of the formatted drive and into the other one (Both external drives were USB 2.0).  Then it took about 7 hours to re-send the info back to the original drive (remember the second drive was borrowed) even so, it took less than 24 hours to leave everything as it was, no harm done.  I did, however, have to buy a fan and have it blow on the computer and both drives to prevent them from overheating during this whole process.

I'm glad to hear that it worked out!  And that's actually relatively quick.  I recently had to go through a similar process and it took me two days with 293 GB.

With the exception of a lost modem driver that I can't find.

It's a Conexant of some sort.  I'd have to open up my computer to get the actual model number and I'm too tired, lazy, and busy to do that at the moment.  For whatever reason, my chipset drivers don't do anything for the modem.  I've looked all over the Gateway and Conexant sites, but the only drivers I've been able to find for my computer so far have only been for Vista.  In fact, I'm using a Vista driver right now, which is why my connection is so shoddy.  Before I get moved into my apartment, I plan on testing out another modem to see how it works out.

In my defense, I've got a ton of stuff going on and I had a very long day.  Heh.
