    Vista Registry Repair Software
    « on: August 25, 2008, 09:29:12 AM »
Hi Its been a LONG time since I needed your help (TG)

Does anyone have a good Registry Repair software for Vista (hopefully free) that you would recommend?

Its has treated me really well for about a year or year and half but its starting to act wonky  (dont know what everyone has complained about knock on wood)

I would like a free full version and see it that helps.

    Thanks guys

    Many results here:

You might want to check user reviews and comments before downloading though.

    Any ideas what's wrong?

No not sure whats wrong.  because its that old now and never had a registry clean up I figure its due for one

More often than not when I play a movie it starts to play then the media player freezes
its been starting weird and usually wants to do a repair because it didnt start properly to begin with and other little annoyances has started to occur.

So I thought I would start with a registry scan

      Thanks!!

Actually I think you should run CCleaner's Registry scan first. (run the whole scan and removal process a few times.

      Get CCleaner here:

Many Registry Cleaners out there do far more harm than good which is why we are a little shy on recommending more than CCleaner here...
And normally you won't see much of a performance increase simply from running a reg cleaner.

          A few Questions:
When is the last time you ran disk cleanup and disk defrag ? ?
Is there alot of video and music files on this machine ? ?
What total capacity is your hard drive and how much Free space is left on it ? ?
Do you have indexing service enabled in Vista ? ?

Let's check these out first and proceed further...

            Hi Patio and thank you.

Ok I will make my way through each question.

I surf a lot so I disk clean and defrag 1-3 xs a week.
I use Window Washer and clean it at least once a month.
Not too much music or video or images on my computer.  I think I will delete the ones I have and clear out more space.
I have 138 GB and 87.2gb is freespace.
            RAM is 1022

Not sure what indexing service is.  I never heard of that.

I will put off doing the registry clean up until I learn more.

            Thanks again

            Title says it all.

As for Registry "Fixers", I don't really have an opinion on that.
What else can they do besides removing bad entries?

Why do you think it's a registry problem?? What is the computer doing now that it wasn't doing before? You do realize that your running the minimum amount a ram for Vista? Personally I would $100 and upgrade the ram. Did you just recently install SP1?

I didn't think it was going to be a registry problem from the start.

Also, CarzyComputerGuy is right, your RAM could use some Upgrading for Vista. Personally, I would get around 2-4GB.

I will put off doing the registry clean up until I learn more.

Well, at least go ahead and get CCleaner and use it.  As previously stated, it's often recommended here because it's known to be a gentle registry cleaner.  In other words, it's basically not as aggressive in it's cleaning of the registry and therefore has a very good track record of being safe to use.

And then, if you want to try another registry cleaner, I'll suggest Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, one of the ones on the list in the link Carbon Dudeoxide posted back in his first reply to you.  I have it installed on my Win XP computer and have never had problems from using it.  Also, the user reviews on the aforementioned link are pretty good.

And, anytime you use any registry cleaner, be sure to backup the registry before executing the cleanup.  CCleaner and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner both prompt you to do this when you start them.

This is your first, and main problem. Give Vista another GB of RAM, and you'll see the difference.
CCleaner is fine, and I use it, as well, but this program is designed mostly for keeping your computer clean of garbage. Don't expect any visible speed increase.
...and as patio said above, stay away from other registry cleaners. You may break more, than fix.

my main problem is that it will work perfectly for about 16hrs or so and then all of a sudden it just won't do anything.

My Windows media is getting worse and worse.  It wont play dvds.  It starts the movie and then freezes.  Once it does that nothing will work.

Sometimes when I reboot it wont start.  it shows the loading bar but will not get as far as my password page.  And sometimes if it does get to the password page it wont load the rest of the way.

Do you think that a disk check would work?

Just curious.  We had some extreme lightening storms.  Is it possible that they could have fried something sensitive in the computer?

              Thanks

As I said, I'd start with installing 1GB of extra RAM, but it's your call.

Did you notice power fluctuations during these storms?  Do you use a surge protector with your computer?  Is it a good one?  Is your computer a laptop/notebook or a desktop?

Its a desktop and I disconnect it from the power supply and the phone (I have dialup) when there is a storm that bad.

I dont have the money to get any upgrades done at this time.

What brand, and model of computer is it?
Also, get RightMark CPU Clock Utility (RMClock): http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml. It may give us more readings.

Ok I have that going.  What readings do I need to post?

Should I take a screen shot to show you?

                                LOL  Ok    will do.

This is the model number etc.

                                Dell Dimension DM061
                                Processor Intel (R) Pentium (R) D CPU 3 GHz  2.99GHz
                                1022MB

and its only about 1yr old now I think.  Had zero problems up until now.

I did uninstall MySpace IM and Skype to.  That has improved it quite a bit.

My dvd is wonky.  Do you think the lazer could be dirty and that I need to clean it so it can better read the disk?

I tried a game disk and it loaded it but the back grounds in the game were non existent.  It wont load a movie disk at all now.  When I first posted it started the movie then froze but you can see that its trying to read the disc

Lasers get dirty. Not common after 1 year of use, but it may happen. You can try lens cleaner.
What bothers me is the fact, that none of the programs, we tried, is able to read your computer temperatures. It's pretty new computer.
Just to summarize, what is your main complain about the machine?

Well my main complaint is that something is wonky LOL  I know that isnt very descriptive.  but there are times when it freezes or becomes sooooo slow that I think that its frozen.

Sometimes when I reboot or turn it on it freezes part way through loading Vista

I have gotten a few blue screens.  but my main worry is the strange starting up and the dvd not working or freezing

There is something wonky but not exactly sure why or what.

it wouldnt download the last item I am trying it again.

I borrow a lot of dvds from my local library instead of renting and they are always filthy with finger prints.

I wish I could better explain what is wrong but I do know that its improved since removing skype and MyspaceIM

but the dvd is still not working :'(

Ok, I think you should wait for Broni.
I think he may have something up his sleeve.

However, since this all started around your temperature monitor, I think you should see how your computer performs when the case is opened and you have an external house-fan blowing at it.

Now, we need some explanation about the above.
Where is that Vista from, would be the main question.

Just in case, Everest made a mistake, go Start, and in "Start search" type in:
                                        winver
                                        Hit Enter.
What does pop-up window say about your Vista version?

                                          That looks fine.
                                          Still stumped about your problem.
Did your computer come with Vista preinstalled?

Yes it was ready to just plug in and use straight from Dell  I bought it brand new

When I reboot it, it takes FOREVER to shutdown

The  dvd/ cd player icon in Computer reads DVD whether there is a disc in it or not.
When I put in a music cd it starts to play and then within the first 15 secs of a song the sound disappears but the slider is still moving.

Same when I put in a DVD it plays in the beginning then freezes.

and the same with a game disc            ???

What are the signs that something my have fried or a loose wire on my DVD?

It worked so well before and now it all of a sudden isnt?  Could some connection come lose?

Here are my thoughts: Vista is an improvement on Win 95 and Win 98 and XP in a sense that it is has the ability to perpetuate registry errors not serious enough to prevent a successful boot. So if your program develops a fault  but succeeds in booting, the fault will be recopied in the registry with the first boot of the day. Every day. Getting different with each copy. This was a clever design strategy and allows the program to heal it'self so to speak.

                                                Source ? ?

To my knowledge this is not how Vista works at all...

Ok Havent a clue what all that meant but here is a new development.

In order for me to upload a movie to YouTube with dial up it takes all nite so that last 2 nites I have left my computer run all nite

When I woke up in the morning, I had a report that said Unexpected Shutdown

Here is the report on that

                                                  Problem signature:
                                                    Problem Event Name:   BlueScreen

                                                    Locale ID:   4105

                                                  Additional information about the problem:

                                                    BCP4:   82AB77A8
                                                    OS Version:   6_0_6000
                                                    Service Pack:   0_0
                                                    Product:   768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
                                                    C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini090808-01.dmp
                                                    C:\Users\HOME\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-29221108-0.sysdata.xml
                                                    C:\Users\HOME\AppData\Local\Temp\WER37DA.tmp.version.txt

I should also point out that for some reason, not sure if its the slow dial up or my firewall that is blocking me from getting the Office XP Service pak 3 installed.  But it wont take.

Suggested improvement #2: Get moar RAMz!!!!  Seriously.  Running Vista with less than 2 GB of RAM is the number 1 cause of computer cancer.

My cousin and her husband decided to buy a cheapo e-Machine with Vista Home Basic and 512 MB of RAM.  Sure, it was probably only $400, but it ran like elephant you-know-what.

Put 2 GB of RAM in it = wow...

                                                      OS Version:   6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3

                                                      Service Pack:   0_0
                                                      Product:   768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
                                                      C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini090808-01.dmp
                                                      C:\Users\HOME\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-29221108-0.sysdata.xml
                                                      C:\Users\HOME\AppData\Local\Temp\WER37DA.tmp.version.txt

I should also point out that for some reason, not sure if its the slow dial up or my firewall that is blocking me from getting the Office XP Service pak 3 installed.  But it wont take.

Like I said, borrow a friend's computer and a 1 GB flash drive to do all your downloading/uploading.

Other than that, given the list of problems:

                                                    1) Running Vista without a Service Pack
                                                    2) Running Vista with 1 GB of RAM.
                                                    3) Blue Screen of Death above--which could be anything from a bad stick of RAM to a bad hard drive to just something messed up in your operating system.

My suggestion would be to take your computer to a computer shop (or to the place you bought it, especially if it's still under warranty and if it has a hardware problem).  Have them back up all your data, reinstall Vista, get your Vista and Office up to date (Vista to SP1 and Office XP to SP3), and see if it still Blue Screens.  If it does, then there's a hardware problem (like a bad stick of RAM).

Once your computer is satisfactorily working, you might want to work on getting some high-speed Internet if you can.  Vista updates are ****ing huge, and your dial-up just won't keep up with them.

If you're in a rural area where cable and DSL aren't available (I know how you feel--I used to be in the same boat), then get a cellular broadband card from Sprint, Verizon, or Cricket.  It may be more expensive than dial-up, but there's a lot less frustration in using the Internet AND in being so far behind with updates...

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.
