Internet explorer expierences a problem and shuts down
    « on: August 30, 2008, 09:37:47 AM »
FOr weeks I have been getting this error message saying internet explorer has expierenced a problem and needs to shut down.  I've been trying to live with it, but I am an online student, and I am afriad this will happen durring an exam.

I send in the error report but it doesn't have any suggestions for fixing whatever the problem is.  I have norton 360 and am constantly updating and running virus scans, nothing.

    HELP!

    Welcome to ComputerHope.

    What are your computer specs?
(RAM, Hard Drive Capacity and Free Space, Processor, ect...)

What are you doing when this error pops up?

    Is this a recent problem?

Most of the time I have just clicked on a link in my email or I am trying to reply to an email.

I have no idea what a spec..hmmmm...But I'll give you what I know about my Gateway laptop.  Windows XP.  AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology + 1 GB memory, ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Graphics, 1.99 Ghz,

I will be using internet explorer, the latest edition they offer as I am constantly updating.

This has been happening for the past few weeks, everyday, several times a day.

Another issue I have had since I bought this laptop is something about "hook load failed" when I start it up.

When I first turn on the computer and it boots up this box pops up and says "Load DLL Hook Load Failed" and I have to press ok.  I can live with that.  My main concern is the internet crashing.

How do I know what type of explorer I am using.  All I know is that I just updated it last week.  In fact I think it had me update it 3 times because it would crash and then have my download something, then crash again and I would download the next thing it told me to.  How do I know what version I am running?  I see they have a verson 8 beta 2, do I need that?

I suspect infection. Go here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

As for IE version....open IE, click Help>About Internet Explorer. It'll tell you.
...and no, you don't want to install any beta version.

I don't know why it would do this, but I recommend getting Firefox.  At least when it says it has an error and has to shut down, it eventually brings up a window asking if you want to go back to your session.

FF is great - but, he needs to get IE and/or the computer fixed, especially if there is a malware infection.

Then, he can elect to use the BETTER browser :)
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

Ok-Microsoft had a malware remover tool and they did not find anything.

It JUST seems to be happening when I get an email and I either hit reply and it opens a new window, or when I click on a link and it opens a new window.

I have internet explorer version 7 with service pack 3.

I would use FF but for stuff like exams you can only go into it 1 time and if you leave it you are done.

              I am so frustrated!

THANK YOU for all the advice you have given me!  I am very grateful!

Yes...but it looks/sounds really hard.  So far all I have done is delete programs that I don't need or were on that list.

You'll be fine, and this is your best chance to solve the problem.

I've had the same problem with my Internet Explorer.  Did you ever find a resolution?

I'm using IE 7.  The problem occurs when clicking on a link that opens a new window.  IE will sometimes freeze and then have to be shut down, including the window(s) that was already open.

                    Any ideas?

                    Thanks
