    Mouse problem?
    « on: August 11, 2008, 09:16:40 PM »
For the past few days my mouse has been pausing for about 2 seconds and I hear the sound for a device turning on and then off. I don't know what's causing it and it's driving me crazy! I've tried updating the driver and even reinstalled the mouse, (which is a plug & play USB kind) and still have the same problem. If it's not the mouse causing this how can I find out what is? Thanks for any help.

It sounds to me like your mouse is simply malfunctioning.  Have you tried using the mouse in another computer?  And have you tried testing your computer with a different mouse?  Especially a PS/2 mouse?

That's not an option since I don't have another computer or mouse.

Do you know anyone who does?  It would help a lot with figuring out if the problem is with your mouse or with your computer.

How often does the problem happen?
When did it start?  Have you tried System Restore to go back to a time before it started?
Have you tried testing the mouse in Safe Mode?  If not, try it and see what happens.
Have you tried plugging the mouse into a different USB port?
      Is it wired or wireless?

Until you can test the mouse on another computer and vice-versa, we might as well explore other possibilities.

I have tried system restore with no luck, I also get the same problem when I plug it into other USB ports. It is a wired mouse, and the problem seems to happen mainly when I open the windows for my files, it sometimes happens when Internet Explorer is open but mostly when I'm in file folders.

And did you try in Safe Mode?

No I didn't, it usually takes about 2 hours after I turn on the computer before the problem starts and I can't do much in safe mode for that long.

Okay...well, if you can't test in Safe Mode or with another mouse, then perhaps we should check for viruses...

I finally bought a new mouse and everything is working fine, so the problem I was having was definitely the mouse. Thanks for the other suggestions, hopefully they can help someone that has a similar problem.
