Normally if the laptop can handle the OS you buy the OS you want to run and use the CD to boot off or you start with the install floppies. From there you just walk though the screen prompts.

You need to include much more information about your laptop that currently has windows 95.  

If you look up the speed of the computer, ram, hard drive space, etc. you can go on google and search for windows 98(se), nt, etc. system requirements.  If your computer meets those requirements you may be able to upgrade.
