[Resolved] Ialmrnt5 display driver stopped responding
« on: September 15, 2008, 07:36:51 PM »
EDIT: If non of the steps here work for you, please start your own topic rather than asking for help in this thread.

Hi!

How is everyone?

Okay, I'm constantly getting this error whenever I open up a highly detailed route in  BVE Train Simulator. It will run with no problems for a few seconds, then the FPS rate drops, and finally, it crashes and this error appears:

Quote
Windows - Display Driver Stopped Responding.

The ialmrnt5 display driver has stopped working normally. Save yourwork and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine  a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to microsoft.

So I restart, and no dialogs appear.

I've tried:
  • Turning down the graphics acceleration, which at least prevented it from happening every time, but it still gave me that error
  • Updating the drivers. No drivers were found.
  • Closing all applications I don't need, still crashed
  • Getting the latest DirectX version, which I did not install after reading that it only runs on Vista.

I'm out of ideas. I do not plan to update WinXP to SP3 because the SP2 installation didn't even finish last time, it only got halfway when I shut down my computer because it was getting late.

I've ran DirectX and Direct3D tests and there were no problems with the files DirectX installed.

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.
1.30GHz processor
256MB Random Access Memory
Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
DirectX 9.0

I really do not want to go to System Restore or anything that involves using a CD-ROM drive, so it would be great if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance.  :)

Just a note: System Restore is perfectly safe and very easy to use and it won't delete any of your files.

Can you try completely reinstalling your graphics card driver?

Well that's a relief.

I don't know, but I do Display Properties tells me my monitor is plug and play, so probably yes.

Here's another bit of information...

I only get a low FPS rate and error in BVE, but not in anything else I have installed, which is what I don't understand.

Hahaha!

Uhh, that didn't work. I tried it right after I rebooted the system and it crashed.

Yes, this one:

"The Ialmrnt5 display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to report this failure to Microsoft."

How did it crash?

It just crashed while I was driving the train, no warning, nothing. It just crashed and showed an error.

Can you try it again?

With pleasure.

EDIT - It crashed.

If you look in Device Manager, see any Yellow Question/Exclamation Marks?

No, though I do see some red X's on the drivers I have disabled/am not using (e.g. Modems which I no longer own).

It only has 64MB of memory (Sssshhhh!) if that helps.

Ok.

As for the driver problem, it could just be the video card is damaged or overheating and not working properly.

Can you try putting a fan next to the computier:

Also, has this always happened?

Thanks Carbon for your reply.

I put the laptop next to a fan, and there was no difference. So I'm very sure it's not over heating.

The problem has not always been there, sometimes it lets me play something detailed, but not everything, and it also seems more frequent when Graphics Acceleration is turned up to full.

Hmmm....All right...

When exactly did the problem start?
Can you try a System Restore to before the problem? (like I said, completely safe and does not require a CD)

One more thing I would like to suggest is More RAM.
You currently have 256mb and it is recommended Windows have AT LEAST 512mb.

Actually I just thought about something...

The problem only seems to occur when the route uses the AWS/TPWS plug-in, but on a route that doesn't use the plug-in (i.e. The Uchibo Line) it runs perfectly. I think this could be the problem. Plus it loads lots of objects, so that could be using all the memory too.

I can't remember when the problem started, or even when I first installed the program, or when it started.

As for the RAM, I've been thinking of that.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking too.

Since it is trying to display something very detailed and/or a lot of object, it could be overloading the video card.

I have found a work around.

There is an alternative to BVE that's open source and uses OpenGL. And better yet, it doesn't crash my computer.

Thanks for your help Carbon!

Hi all,
I also am experiencing the same problem, it seems selective on acting up.
I can use realplayer or windows media player just great on email and items saved on the puter, but any new downloads it scrambles the screen and won't operate. I have to shut down and restart to work the puter and all works well unless I try to play a download.

Any ideas, I read about Dr. Watson, and was considering going into that program to diagnose the error, but stumbled on this site and found the same error.

If theres any help available, please let me know.

I'm running SP3 on XP

Hi all,
I received the same error message listed above, while I was playing Wolfteam. It had been fine all along, until today. :( After i clicked OK, it returned to a messy desktop background with funny colours. The error only comes on when i play. When I start wolfteam, it is ok. Only when I Play, then this occurs.
