What operating system do you use? What software are you using to defragment the drive? What happens (or doesn't happen) when you try to defrag?
I'm guessing you're running one of the Windows operating systems, and you're trying to use the defragment software that comes with Windows. This is not necessarily bad -- just trying to figure out what's going on for you.
