How are you connected to the interent?
What type of connection? Any router involved? Wired, or wireless?

I am connected to the internet through a router but it is directly hooked to the computer.  I have a cable connection.

Also I tried to reinstall everything from the recovery disk and nothing changed.

How did you re-install - step by step?

Did you receive any error messages during the recovery (re-install of the operating system)?

Is this the correct recovery disk for your computer?

What is the make and model of your computer?

I reinstalled from the recovery disk.  Also I ordered it right from the manufacterer.

The make and model of my computer is emachines t6420

I did not recieve any errors.

So, I assume that you started your computer with the Recovery CD in the CD drive and booted from the CD - is this correct? Were you asked any questions/given any warnings during the Recovery process?

Go to System Properties: Windows key+Pause/Break key, or: Control Panel>System; on the General Tab, what does it say under "System?"

Click on the Hardware Tab>Device Manager, you will see a listing of devices in your computer. Are there any yellow exclamation points?

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

Yes I used the recovery from the cd itself.  The only warnings and prompts that were given to me is about recovery or formating the hard drive.  I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything.

Under the System in the general tab this is what it says

          Microsoft Windows XP
          Media Center Edition
          Version 2002
          Service Pack 2

          Then the oem number

          Then this

          Emachines
          AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
          3400+
2.21 Ghz 896 MB of RAM
          Physical Address extension

There are no exclamation points by anything.  Also the status of the computer is that I still cannot download anything with java and cannot download updates through internet explorer.

Porter - I'm very sorry but I'm out of ideas and, were I you, would contact emachines directly. But, many others are here who may have some different thoughts - keep checking in.

                Best of luck.

I have a kind of dumb question.  Could there be a corrupt file in windows that is not allowing me to access java websites?

Try to connect the computer straight to the modem, bypassing router.

I can use java again.  I haven't tried the updates yet.  I really need to have the wireless router hooked up.  Is there any way around this issue with it being hooked up?

There is a known problem with some machines after SP3 is installed with inability to install updates. Here are step by step instructions to resolve it.

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Copy and paste each of the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

                    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
                    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
                    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
                    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
                    regsvr32 wups.dll
                    regsvr32 wups2.dll
                    regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Then run the update again . .

If anyone knows someone with this problem give them this info. They will think you are  very smart.  ;)

Your router may have a problem.

I unhooked the router and I thought that java was working fine.  I went to the pogo site and it says that I don't have java installed.  I know I do.  Does anyone know if I unhooked the router, should I reinstall java?
