Can you make sure the External Hard Drive works on another computer? When you connect it, exactly what happens?
Have you tried Patio's suggestion?
Right click My Computer and select Manage then Disk Management...Find the drive and right click it and select Properties...Report back with your findings...

Try shutting down the machine and then plugging the External into a rear USB port...unplug any unneccessary USB devices then use the same procedure. If nothing then you need to try it on another machine to see if it's recognised.Have you been using the "safely remove hardware" feature in the system tray area ? ?How old is this enclosure and what make and model ? ?

If it doesn't show up at all on 4 machines chances are the enclosure has gone South...Carefully remove the drive from it and hook it up as an internal slave IDE drive and if you are lucky the drive and your data will be intact...
