Ha, I've noticed also, that you have AVG8, and Norton running at the same time.
One of them has to go. Hopefully Norton.
If so, use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
After that give me new HJT log.

I'm a bit confused about the Norton thing. I use AVG 8 and I don't recall ever using Norton on this machine. It did come with Ghost which I chose not to install but I don't recall if it came with Norton AntiVirus and if I uninstalled it when I went with AVG. The Norton link you referred me to is asking which Norton product I have. Do I tell them Ghost even though I never installed it or can you tell from my log which other Norton Product I might have. I got this machine in 2006.

      Thanks again.

I don't see Ghost, but I see some services from some Norton security program.
You're gonna be fine going with I have a Norton product that was purchased from my Internet Service Provider (ISP), and we'll get rid of any leftovers through HJT.

*** You need to update Java:
        http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove.

*** Download, and run QuickTime Killer: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Launchers-Shutdown-Tools/QuickTime-Killer.shtml
After downloading, double click on EnGraphQuickTimeKillerInstaller.msi file.
You may be asked to download, and install .NET Framework
QuickTime Killer will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime. QuickTime itself won't be removed from your computer, and will be available whenever needed.

Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (no actual program will be removed):

I can do all the QuickTime stuff but I think I need to hold off on updating Java. The reason being is that I work for a company uses a program that is on my computer that still uses an older version of Java. The time that I updated Java rendered their program useless so I had to revert back. They obviously need to update their software but I have no control over that. My PC seems to be working pretty well right now so I hope that the Java update can be elective rather than necessary.

I assume I can proceed with the QuickTime Killer without addressing Java. I'll wait to hear a confirmation from you before proceeding. Are there any other things I need to do after QuickTime?

          Thanks again.

QT Killer has nothing to do with Java, so you can install it with no problem.
As for Java, this is little bit strange, but I don't want to compromise your work settings.
At the same time, no, it's not elective. Keeping Java up to date is serious security issue.

I will definitely convey your observation about Java security to my company. I'll proceed with the QT Killer process. Is there anything else I should do after that?

After all those recent changes, you may run CCleaner one more time. You're all set.

OK...got it all done. The only thing I have a question about is that I couldn't find reference to

              - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

when running HJT after installing QT Killer. All the other entries you told me to fix were there but not that one.

Oh, that's fine, because QT Killer took care of QuickTime. Stupid thing won't bother your computer resources anymore.

Yay!!! My PC is humming right now!  I really appreciate your help. I know this is a free forum but if I can make a contribution to any deserving cause I would be happy to do so. I'm thinking CCleaner but if you have another preference please let me know.

Also, is there a way to save this discussion thread in case I need to refer to it in the future?
