    need some help
    « on: October 20, 2008, 04:30:47 PM »
A few days ago my computer stopped allowing access to several websites that i used to use frequently. I can access these sites on any other computer on the same network. I have disabled all firewall and anti-viruses and even tried uninstalling them. I found that my host file was blocking one website but i fixed that but it still wont access several other sites including my own website i created. I tried 3 different browsers and i even tried ftp to my website and nothing worked. I think something may have happened in the registry but i could easily be wrong. Any suggestions?

Please, post couple of sites, you can't access, and tell us what happens, when you try.

        Microsoft.com
        yahoo.com

I know have avast but i know that its not avast as i just installed it and i had this problem before i used avast.

          You disabled your antivirus?  :o

Can you post the contents of your HOSTS file here.

yes i disabled my antivirus cus i know how. here is what my host file has in it.

            Code: [Select]
            # Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
            #
            # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
            #
            # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
            # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
            # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
            # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
            # space.
            #
            # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
            # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
            #
            # For example:
            #
            #      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
            #       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

i did find another host file buried deep ion the windows folder and it has this listed at the bottom but i have vista and i cant save anything to my system folders. I would save the file and copy it over from somewhere else but i cant because it says acess denied.

            Code: [Select]
            127.0.0.1       localhost
            ::1             localhost

i have no idea what that means or what it even blocks. I also found out that my computer is blocking bf2142 and halo2 from connecting to the internet.

also the location of the other hosts file that i found was

            Code: [Select]
            C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-w..nfrastructure-other_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_024e4071fa6fea95

            In Windows XP, go Start>Run
            In Vista, go Start>StartSearch

            Type in:
            cmd

            In Windows XP, click OK.
            In Vista, hit Enter.

            Command Prompt window will open.
            Type in:
            regsvr32 wuapi.dll (<----watch for "space" after "regsvr32")
            Hit Enter.

Repeat same regsvr32 command for following files:
            wuaueng.dll
            wucltui.dll
            wups.dll
            wuweb.dll
            atl.dll
            softpub.dll
            wintrust.dll
            initpki.dll
            mssip32.dll
            softpub.dll
            wintrust.dll
            initpki.dll
            dssenh.dll
            rsaenh.dll
            gpkcsp.dll
            sccbase.dll
            slbcsp.dll
            cryptdlg.dll

Restart computer, and try to access web site(s) in question again.

before i do things in cmd what will his do? also what does the regsvr32 command do?

              update

i was in need to acces those sites so i went ahead and tried. i got an error saying the file could not load for these:
              wucltui.dll
              wuweb.dll
              alt.dll
              initpki.dll
              gpkcsp.dll
              sccbase.dll
              slbcsp.dll

do these files matter or are they the solution to my problem?

Search your computer for those files, and see, if they're present.

In Windows Explorer, go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, and make sure, two highlighted settings looks exactly the same:

                  Search again.
