Just to let you know in case you haven't found it, you can set it so it pauses or stops defragging if your CPU usage goes above ##%.
This helps prioritize other programs and applications.

All my boot files are corrupt- hal.dll, c_1252.nls, pci.sys...


I will return when I can get my XP install working- wish me luck....

(It might not be smartdefrag, or it could be some specific problem with my config...)

Sounds like a Windows project to me....
I only run Auslogics for my defrag needs.

I'm using it and it works well for me.  No problems, quite the contrary really.  Only regret has to be not looking for it earlier.  thanks for the link.

Yes I must revoke anything bad I said about it. It obviously wasn't Smartdefrag- it was just a coincidence that my problems arose right after rebooting after a three hour defrag.

I'm kind of afraid to run it again now, though.

Anyway- time to install my drivers

I don't have mine running in the background. I just start it up every few days at night before I go to bed. I set it so it shuts the computer down automatically.

I do have it running in the background.
First, initial defrag took couple of hours, but my last one, today, after having it running in the background for 3-4 days, took 8 sec!

I think what Patio was getting at was that the performance hit from running a program such as this in the background is more then the performance hit from accessing a fragmented hard drive.

Although it only actually defragments during idle time- all processes take up a base number timeslices regardless of what they are doing- this base level of time slices is determined by the priority of the process.


It is a good program- but if I do use it it will be for manual usage. I hadn't fragmented a single time since I installed XP on this 500GB drive 8 months ago, and I use the drive heavily- my fragmentation according to the program was only 0.06%... and yet it took 3 hours to complete the defragmentation.

After trying smart defrag a few days I went back to my jk defrag which I think does a better defrag job...To each his own I guess..

I tried JK Defrag. It seemed to do its job. How does JK Defrag compare, if anyone knows?
