RAID 0 broken - hardware or driver issue?
    « on: November 03, 2008, 04:42:28 PM »
Here are specs for the system with the broken RAID:

    CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+
    Motherboard: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4
    RAM: DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 1024 MB, G.Skill (x2)
             DDR2, PC2-6400 (400 MHz), 512 MB, G.Skill (x2)
    OS: XP, SP2
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS-60PSA0 149.05 GB (x2)
    Video: EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB (PCI-Express)
    PSU: Rosewill 600 W

The OS is installed on the RAID 0 volume for performance.  Something breaking the array, so this performance is now gone.  :-\

After the "standard" POST the system attempts to detect the array.  It hangs there ("Detecting array . . . ") for a few minutes before "0 ERROR NVIDIA STRIP" is displayed.

I press F10 to enter the RAID utility and see the following:

    -ARRAY LIST-
BOOT     STATUS     VENDOR     ARRAY MODEL NAME
BBS       ERROR     NVIDIA      STRIPE 298.10 G

When viewing details of the array:

    -ARRAY DETAIL-
ADAPT     CHANNEL     M/S     INDEX     DISK MODEL                CAPACITY
     1           0       MASTER     1     WDC WD1600AAJS-60PASA0     149.05 GB

There are options to Rebuild, Delete, or Clear Disk.

Rebuilding is not an option as only 1 of the 2 disks in the array are detected.

I'm going to use a spare ATA HDD to boot the system and then test the hard drives.  I will post more as developments occur.
Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?
