File extensions

Hi, good morning. May i ask you some questions?
am using windows server 2003
since one month now all files in my pc display extensions ,E,g all ms word file they display .doc etc
 i want to know the causes of these. am using Hp computer; CPU 2.4 Ghz  inter core 2 duo  & Ram 5.83 GB thanks

    Open Explorer / Tools / Options / View / check to see if "Hide extensions for known file types" is checked.  Uncheck it  / OK.

    Actually, if you do not want to the file extensions, which seems to be what you want, you would do the opposite of what Alan said.  You want the box for "Hide extensions for known file types" checked.
