Notepad should try and open any .txt file by itself, but not .doc files.
Is Notepad trying to open .doc files? Notepad actually cant read .doc file correctly.
Still, if you want RTF or TXT files to open in Microsoft Word,
Right click the file, go to "Open With" and "Other Application/Program"
Find Microsoft Word on the list, and check "Always use this program"
