after coming up desktop icon screen and taskbar disappear
    « on: December 02, 2008, 10:22:32 PM »
Hp Desktop, Athlon, Windows Home XP,SP3,  This is a business (Florist)computer lots of memory and not much of it in use.  Security is Norton comes with the ATT ISP.

Careful not to surf, no wierd sites, defrag weekly, only one user, real close to the ATT supply (just outside our backdoor) so speeds are good, but... something happened two months ago.  Note, the comp. stays on 24 hrs.

Currently the is computer is very slow to boot,  when Desktop and Taskbar come up as soon as it's all loaded, it all disappears, leaving the Blue Fractal screen.

I have to shut it down on tower and restart. the shortcuts to shut down after it all disappears do not work.

Because of this I cannot get into the Control Panel to try a restore point.

I've removed the cover, aircanned it (it was pretty dirty). But everything looks ok.

Would appreciate some help. Must figure out whats wrong. Sure don't want to buy another one.

    Thanks for your help!

      Thanks Carbon for the reply.

Yes actually I did go to the suggested thread, and tried those things yesterday.
right clicking the desktop does nothing because the screen is gone before the slowed processing can take place.  Once icons are gone nothing to do but shut it down again.

Also since they do show themselves, don't think it's a case of being resized out of view, but I did also previously ck the corners to see what would happen, nothing did.

As far as the cntl-atl-del it does not work at all.

The final option of going to the Task Bar doesn't work for the same reason above, once they are gone its just blue screen.

Nothing has been done to the computer thats unusal or new.  Just came in one day and found this problem.

I have Norton Antivirus/firewall with the ISP, it has worked well for 8 years.  I keep it updated.

I have automatic updates running windows, etc.

Sorry I am not at the shop right now to tell you anything else.  There are a number of fix softwares that I have run on it from only approved authors.  Combofix, and several others. I will tomorrow try to get the sick comp. online with you guys.

I'll try to post a HJT log for you tomorrow.  By the way I do not get any error messages with the blue screen like I have read others do.  Thanks again for the quick reply.

      Have a great night.

      All right. Keep us posted.

Note: you may want to see if the computer works in Safe Mode.

        Ok, something different today.

I  logged on in safemode.  No desktop just start button and taskbar.

Tried to get on IE, wouldn't let me...does it not work in Safemode?
Got out restarted, internet light is on modem now.

However,   Now I Have No DeskTop At All, just the Taskbar, and HP's Fractal Blue screen (thats not the blue screen of death is it)?

        Please help.

        I don't believe it is.

When you're in Safe Mode or Normal Mode, can you run any programs?

ctrl+Alt+Delete, bring up task manager, if possible, and try "New task" to start "explorer.exe"

        and see what happens.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I've been at this all day.  Could get one user acct. to hold the desktop and taskbar, but nothing else.  restarted and it thru up the green hillside background instead of the fractal blue it was. and put the recycle bin in the opposite corner.

Very strange stuff.  So I started thinking this might have something to do with the IE Beta 8 I downloaded awhile back, but not sure if it was before or after the trouble started.

I removed the IE Beta 8 and already had Foxfire installed so I'm using it now.

Hoping to get a HJT Log for you.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Gosh can't believe I got that to post.  I also ran a complete Norton scan of the almost 567,000 files with no threads indicated.  I really don't think it's a virus.  Like I said seems like Windows just went nuts.

But the bad part is I still can't get the other user screens to stay up, and one of those is my administrator acct.

Hope this helps, and again I am so grateful for your help.

The log is clean, but I'd try to uninstall Norton, and see what happens.

If I uninstall Norton, my only security, won't that leave me vulnerable to attack?

Sure don't need any other problems.

Also, how would uninstalling the Norton be related to my desktop  problem?

Not from Missouri, but very interested in learning all the details about this
            repair stuff.

            Thanks for your input Broni.

Also, as an Update for this morning.   I left the computer on Stand By all night, because I didn't want to lose you guys.

The Desktop screen for the sub user acct (also Admiin, thank God) took just a tad long to load, but came up ok, and allowed me to get to you  here.  So that's good!

Still need to figure out why my true Administrator Desktop will not stay up.

I remembered that yesterday a screen came up saying the resolution on the screen was too low, and asked if it could repair that.  Told it ok, don't know how that might figure in.

I went through every setting, file, program in Control Panel yesterday,  everything seemed to my self taught eyes to be ok.

One thing is that it said I was running a large number of files at Start Up.
It shouldn't be more than about 30, right?    The full system scan yesterday said the Processes and Start Up Items were in the 4,000 range!!!  considering it only scanned about 6,000 items total.

From my log, can you tell me if there are any unnecessary files in Start Up, if so, maybe unchecking some of them might help?

You have my full attention today, for your replies, thanks.

I think Broni's suggestion to remove Norton was not to leave you vulnerable as there are excellent FREE replacements...
Rather he was suggesting it as an option to improve your systems overall performance and well being.
Some here including myself have over time found it's nature to be overly invasive on most machines and resource hogging as well.

If this is an avenue you would like to pursue in addition to us fixing your other issues let him know and good solid advice will certainly follow.

I replied but it isn't showing for some reason, so I'll try again.

              Patio, thanks for the reply.

Can you suggest a Free replacement for the Norton as Broni suggested I take it out.

Also, where would I find that download.

I did replace the IE with Foxfire as so many of you guys in the know suggest that it is a good browser.  I agree that the Norton is not the best option, but I was not sure I could remove it since it came with my ISP ATT package.  Also I know more than one loaded they fight each other and cause problems.

I ran CCleaner today it removed 53.5MB of left over bits.

I am still concerned that my Administrator User File cannot or will not hold
its Desktop Icons and its Tasktray.

I am using another User Acct which fortunately also had admin. on it, but not access to all my very necessary files on that desktop.  So my big problem still exist.

Also, from looking at the logs I posted, I think your saying my Desktop problem is not related to a virus, trojan etc. right?

Are there any other logs you'd like to see, while I have access on this computer?

              Thanks again for your help.

Download (do NOT install, yet!), ONE of these:
              - Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
              - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
              - free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Download Norton Removal Tool (do NOT use it, yet!): http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

              Physically disconnect from the internet.
              Run Norton tool.
Install security program of your choice.
If you went with Avast, or Avira, turn Windows firewall on.
If you went with Comodo, no other action is needed.
              Reconnect to the net.

I think you omitted a vital detail - which Safe mode.
From what I remember, there are multiple choices which affect what the computer is able to do (e.g. Boot into DOS; Boot into Windows with or without Internet etc.

                Regards
                Alan
