Motherboard only reads 384mb of RAM NEED HELP!
    « on: December 06, 2008, 03:59:55 PM »
    Ok,

So I have a cb60-BX rev B1 Motherboard that runs at 100fsb. It has 3 dimm slots which I have put 3 256mb pc133 sdram ecc sticks in and it only reads 384mb of ram. I have ECC on in the Bios. I was thinking maybe it likes pc100 better?

    Any Ideas?

check your motherboard manual to insure it runs ecc mem., the majority do not..

      Good Luck

Yes it does support ecc. I thought I heard that you can't put faster mhz ram that is higher then your motherboards fsb? If that's the case my motherboards fsb is 100mhz and the rams is running at 133mhz.

Not compatible? So I should go with pc100?

The manual clearly states, that you should use PC-100 RAM

PC133 could potentially work, if and only if it is backward compatible.

Late in SDRAM's life (when DDR and RDRAM came out), some manufacturers began cheaping out by making their SDRAM not backward compatible.  I found that one out the hard way in 2003 when I bought some PC133 RAM for a machine with an 800 MHz (100 FSB x 8 Multiplier) processor.  I was wondering why it wouldn't work.  The motherboard supported PC133 RAM.  In the end, the label on the RAM's packaging explicitly stated not backward compatible!

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.

            So I want to buy 3 256mb sticks of pc100 sdram ecc. It's a  Intel 440bx chipset.

So should I use high or low density ram for it?

I have ECC on in the Bios.

            Is that ECC memory?
            Try turning ECC off.

It was off before then I turned it on, made no difference.

You didn't answer my question. It's a 440bx Intel chipset should I use high density or low density ram? I'm going to put pc100 256mb ecc registered ram in it and I want to know what density of ram I should put in it?

Unless you need Error correction memory, I would advise against it.
              ECC is slower than nonECC.

Did you try to load the BIOS defoault  settings?
              Does it have OPTIMIZED defaults?

I need the ecc memory. It's the only way it will allow up to 768mb for that board.

                  Look at this
                  http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/ram-power-supply-support/287320-hi-density-low-density-ram.html

This article is really deep. So what should I use for a 440bx chipset, high density or low density ram?
