    « on: December 01, 2008, 10:18:24 PM »
    Dear all, Thanks in advance.

I have a materials management system developed in Foxpro on windows 98 platform with dongle support (Hardware that permit to run the software). Now we upgraded our system from Win 98 to Win XP. This create a problem to run our Materials management program on Win XP. I tried solution i.e.
Right clisk on EXE file > Compitibilty Tab > Check mark on "Run this program on Compitibility mode for  Windows 98".

With this solution, program loaded but imidiately computer hangup (Not responding mode).

    Please suggest some solution.

Are you doing this directly with the .exe ? ?
If so try creating a Desktop shortcut first and see it this helps.

If this is a business thing, why not just have an old PC running Windows 98 and have it connected to the other machine on a LAN?  :) You already have something that works for you, so why not just leave it as is.

I have done directly to .exe as well as on shortcut too, but failed.

Read over the link Patio gave, it tells how to set the options needed to run an older program in Windows XP. If you don't understand some detail, check back here and somebody will help you.  :)

Another option would be to use a VM [virtual machine] to run Windows 98, then put the app. there.

Would it be simple to make this dual boot, with a choice of XP or 98 ?

          Regards

            Workarounds:

            1) Use a virtual machine, as suggested before.  The virtual machine runs Windows 98 and the program.  VirtualBox or VMWare would be best to do this with, since they have USB support for your dongle.  Virtual PC 2007 has no USB support.

            2) Dual-boot.  However, that makes it a pain in the rear for the end-user that wants to run the program as well as anything inside XP.

            Long-term solution:

            1) Look for a new version of the program.  Dear god, man--nobody can purchase Windows 98 anymore, and your program is only compatible with an OS without support?

I would suggest Workaround #1 above as a stop-gap to buy you time to get your act together and get a new version of the program--something that will run not only in XP, but in Vista (32 AND 64-bit) as well!!

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.

Hmm, FoxPro Apps can be recompiled with a newer version if FoxPro; I believe this was a bug in the foxpro 5 and 6 runtime.
