IE website access not working properly
    « on: December 14, 2008, 08:56:20 PM »
When trying to access websites IE either hangs up or is very slow retrieving the website.  Any recommendation you can provide would be helpfull.  Below are the home desktop PC computer specifics.  I have talked to Verizon DSL several times and they say everything looks fine from their end.  My speed should be up to 1.5M and I check it each morning and evening over the last 3 weeks with a low of 891 to a high of 1553.  Sometime I am unable to get a speed test completed.  If I turn off the DSL box, router and computer and turn them back on in the following order DSL/router/comp I usually get 1-1.5M speeds.

When I bring home by work laptop it connects to the home wireless router and the internet responds as expected with little or no problems.

This is a new computer and the IE problem has been with us most of the time.
    DEL XPS_420 Intel 2 Quad CPU 2.66 GHz 4GBRAM 32-bit
Microsoft Vista Premium Service Pack 1
    Verizon DSL Westell Model 6100
    Belkin Wireless G router 2.4GHz 802.11g
    TrendMicro Internet Security

    Thanks,

      Hi Jake,

      Welcome to ComputerHope

Which version of IE are you using?

You could also make a post Here, and see if its a malware problem.

      Use what talent you possess.

Are you saying, that you connect fine at home, but you're having problems at your workplace?

        Ivy,

        Internet Explorer Version 7.0.6001.18000

I'll run hijackThis and send it over to malware.

        Thanks.

        Broni,

My home desktop computer is having the problems with IE.  On occasion when I bring my work laptop home it works fine with the internet connecton and router and wireless modem I have at home.  So the problem looks to be with the home desktop computer and not the DSL line, I think.

        Thanks.

Have you tried bypassing the router and hooking up direct to the modem?

          Couple more things to try.

          1. Go Start>Run ("Start search" in Vista).
          Type in:
          cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

          At Command Prompt, type in:
          ping www.google.com > ping.txt
          Hit Enter.

          In Window Explorer navigate to:
          C:\Documents and Settings\your_name (C:\Users\your_name in Vista)
Double click on ping.txt to open it in Notepad.
Copy all text, and post it in your next reply.

          2. Go to http://www.speedtest.net/, and post speed results.

          3. Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same loading problems?

            Shark Fin 101,

Yes without the router it seemed to work better.  But I would like to have the wireless router working also so the kids can use the downstairs computer.  Any advise from this point?

            Thanks,

            Jim

            Broni,

            1.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.147] with 32 bytes of data:

            General failure.

            General failure.

            General failure.

            General failure.

            Ping statistics for 74.125.19.147:

                Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

            2.
Running Speedtest.net it gets to ~1300 on the up slope and stops mid way down the down slope at 1058 kbps, 72%, 253 ms ping.  Didn't complete test.

            3.
Well it is hard to tell.  Some sites load fine other are slow.  Unable to run speedtest.net in this mode.

            Thanks,

            Jim

Why did you use www.l.google.com, not www.google.com?

This appears to be a dead end... the problem must lie within your computer. (I assume the downstairs PC works fine?)

One other thing before abandoning this route: Try doing a ping command (like Broni said) while hooked directly to the modem. Does that work any better?

Initial speed test tonight was 848 kbps.  After turn off/on of DSL box and wireless modem speed test was 1391.

I typed it just as you listed (ping www.google.com > ping.txt) and here is what came back with the wireless router in place.  For some reason it comes back with an "l." before google.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.99] with 32 bytes of data:

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                Ping statistics for 74.125.19.99:

                    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Now I will try it bypassing the wireless router and here are the results.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.99] with 32 bytes of data:

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                Ping statistics for 74.125.19.99:

                    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

The computer downstairs isn't working properly as it has a strong wireless connection but often has little or no connectivity.  I figured the first step would be to get the main new computer with DSL modem and wireless router working first, then move to troubleshoot the one downstairs.

                Thanks for all the help.

                  Nothing suspicious here.
I'd advice you to uninstall Dell Support Center, which is known for causing problems.
                  Also...Close IE.
                  - Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?
                  -  did you try different browser, like Firefox?

                    Dell Support Center uninstalled.
I tried IE with no add-ons and it seemed to work worse.

When I removed the wireless router and used the DSL box hooked directly to the computer IE seems to work pretty good.  I think the problem may be with the router.  After thinking about it the DSL and wireless router worked fine with the old computer but ever since the new computer was installed IE hangs up or is real slow.  With the new computer I just plugged things in and started it up.  I added a few programs that I use.  But I didn't load anything for the wireless router.  Windows must have a driver for routers as the wireless router does work now, just not all that well and causes IE to hang up.  I'm thinking of uninstalling the router and reinstalling it.  What do you think?  Also I have looked for any conflicts of running 2 firewalls or virus protectors.  I run Trendmicro firewall and virus scan and security.  I've checked to the best of my ability to confirm that windows doesn't have the firewall or virus on also.  Could you tell me how to confirm only ONE firewall and virus scan is on?  Thanks for all your help.

I agree, you may have a router problem. There is really nothing to install/reinstall. You just hook it up, and it should be ready to go. You may need a new one.
To establish that, I asked you, if you tried another browser like Firefox, to see, if same thing happens.
