IE website access not working properly
    « on: December 14, 2008, 08:56:20 PM »
When trying to access websites IE either hangs up or is very slow retrieving the website.  Any recommendation you can provide would be helpfull.  Below are the home desktop PC computer specifics.  I have talked to Verizon DSL several times and they say everything looks fine from their end.  My speed should be up to 1.5M and I check it each morning and evening over the last 3 weeks with a low of 891 to a high of 1553.  Sometime I am unable to get a speed test completed.  If I turn off the DSL box, router and computer and turn them back on in the following order DSL/router/comp I usually get 1-1.5M speeds.

When I bring home by work laptop it connects to the home wireless router and the internet responds as expected with little or no problems.

This is a new computer and the IE problem has been with us most of the time.
    DEL XPS_420 Intel 2 Quad CPU 2.66 GHz 4GBRAM 32-bit
Microsoft Vista Premium Service Pack 1
    Verizon DSL Westell Model 6100
    Belkin Wireless G router 2.4GHz 802.11g

    Thanks,

      Hi Jake,

      Welcome to ComputerHope

Which version of IE are you using?

You could also make a post Here, and see if its a malware problem.

      Use what talent you possess.

Are you saying, that you connect fine at home, but you're having problems at your workplace?

        Ivy,

        Internet Explorer Version 7.0.6001.18000

I'll run hijackThis and send it over to malware.

        Thanks.

        Broni,

My home desktop computer is having the problems with IE.  On occasion when I bring my work laptop home it works fine with the internet connecton and router and wireless modem I have at home.  So the problem looks to be with the home desktop computer and not the DSL line, I think.

        Thanks.

Have you tried bypassing the router and hooking up direct to the modem?

          Couple more things to try.

          1. Go Start>Run ("Start search" in Vista).
          Type in:
          cmd
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

          At Command Prompt, type in:
          ping www.google.com > ping.txt
          Hit Enter.

          In Window Explorer navigate to:
          C:\Documents and Settings\your_name (C:\Users\your_name in Vista)
Double click on ping.txt to open it in Notepad.
Copy all text, and post it in your next reply.

          2. Go to http://www.speedtest.net/, and post speed results.

          3. Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same loading problems?

            Shark Fin 101,

Yes without the router it seemed to work better.  But I would like to have the wireless router working also so the kids can use the downstairs computer.  Any advise from this point?

            Thanks,

            Jim

            Broni,

            1.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.147] with 32 bytes of data:

            General failure.

            General failure.

            General failure.

            General failure.

            Ping statistics for 74.125.19.147:

                Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

            2.
Running Speedtest.net it gets to ~1300 on the up slope and stops mid way down the down slope at 1058 kbps, 72%, 253 ms ping.  Didn't complete test.

            3.
Well it is hard to tell.  Some sites load fine other are slow.  Unable to run speedtest.net in this mode.

            Thanks,

            Jim

Why did you use www.l.google.com, not www.google.com?

This appears to be a dead end... the problem must lie within your computer. (I assume the downstairs PC works fine?)

One other thing before abandoning this route: Try doing a ping command (like Broni said) while hooked directly to the modem. Does that work any better?

Initial speed test tonight was 848 kbps.  After turn off/on of DSL box and wireless modem speed test was 1391.

I typed it just as you listed (ping www.google.com > ping.txt) and here is what came back with the wireless router in place.  For some reason it comes back with an "l." before google.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.99] with 32 bytes of data:

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                Ping statistics for 74.125.19.99:

                    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Now I will try it bypassing the wireless router and here are the results.

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.19.99] with 32 bytes of data:

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                General failure.

                Ping statistics for 74.125.19.99:

                    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

The computer downstairs isn't working properly as it has a strong wireless connection but often has little or no connectivity.  I figured the first step would be to get the main new computer with DSL modem and wireless router working first, then move to troubleshoot the one downstairs.

                Thanks for all the help.

                  Nothing suspicious here.
I'd advice you to uninstall Dell Support Center, which is known for causing problems.
                  Also...Close IE.
                  - Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?
                  -  did you try different browser, like Firefox?

                    Dell Support Center uninstalled.
I tried IE with no add-ons and it seemed to work worse.

When I removed the wireless router and used the DSL box hooked directly to the computer IE seems to work pretty good.  I think the problem may be with the router.  After thinking about it the DSL and wireless router worked fine with the old computer but ever since the new computer was installed IE hangs up or is real slow.  With the new computer I just plugged things in and started it up.  I added a few programs that I use.  But I didn't load anything for the wireless router.  Windows must have a driver for routers as the wireless router does work now, just not all that well and causes IE to hang up.  I'm thinking of uninstalling the router and reinstalling it.  What do you think?  Also I have looked for any conflicts of running 2 firewalls or virus protectors.  I run Trendmicro firewall and virus scan and security.  I've checked to the best of my ability to confirm that windows doesn't have the firewall or virus on also.  Could you tell me how to confirm only ONE firewall and virus scan is on?  Thanks for all your help.

I agree, you may have a router problem. There is really nothing to install/reinstall. You just hook it up, and it should be ready to go. You may need a new one.
To establish that, I asked you, if you tried another browser like Firefox, to see, if same thing happens.

I looked into the wireless router and while it didn't have software for Vista as part of the initial CD, the website for this model F5D7230-4 and version 7001 stated
"The driver for this product is included in the Vista operating system. Simply plug in your device and start networking!"

I hooked up the wireless router and installed Firefox.  Firefox is a clean browser and I may use it.

Now AOL, IE and firefox all seem to be working fine.  I need to make note of websites or situations where the browser hangs up so have test cases to run if this start to get bad again.  Now I am going to get the kids (our old computer) computer working downstairs connected via the wireless router.

I ran HijackThis and the results are below.

It this point the new computer seems to be accessing the internet fine and I will monitor the behavior.

                      Thanks for all your help

Interesting...so, what has actually changed? Nothing, and everything works now?
Maybe Dell Support Center had something to do with it?
BTW, there is still one service from DSC running.

                      Go Start>Start search, type in:
                      cmd
Right click on cmd.exe above, and click "Run as Admin."
                      At Command Prompt, type in:
                      sc stop dellsupportcenter
                      Hit Enter.
Wait for the service to be stopped.
                      Type in:
                      sc delete dellsupportcenter
                      Hit Enter.
                      Wait for confirmation.

If, for some reason the above commands don't won't to work, replace dellsupportcenter with sprtsvc_dellsupportcenter

                      Restart computer.

I agree... why is it better now?  Like you said the DSC removal may have helped.  One other thing I did do was the house cleaning as part of Step 2 in the malware removal process.  Step 1 didn't apply and I didn't go beyond step 2.

I tried your recommended steps for removing the last DSC service and in response to the follwoing commands one by one I got the same response.
                        sc stop dellsupport center
                        sc stop sprtsvc_dellsupport center
                        sc delete dellsupport center
                        sc delete sprtsvc_dellsupport center

                        Response after each command:
                        [SC] Open Service Failed 1060:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Thanks for all your help.  :) :)

I'm glad, things are better :)

Go  Start, and in "Start search" type in:
                        services.msc
                        Hit Enter.

                        Services window will open.
                        Look for SupportSoft Sprocket Service
Let me know, if it's there.

I typed in services.msc and looked things over.

SupportSoft Sprocket Servie was not in the list.

Anything else to try let me know.

                          Thanks much.  :)

Do you still have Dell Support Center folder in C:\Program Files?
If so, delete it, and post fresh HJT log.

I just realized, what you did wrong.
Go back to my reply #16.
                            dellsupportcenter is one word.
In  your reply #17, you have:
                            sc stop dellsupport center
                            Try again.

                              Broni,

Actually I incorrectly typed the reply on #17.  I tried it again as you described in #16 and double checked the spelling.
                              I got the same error.

                              Response after each command:
                              [SC] Open Service Failed 1060:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

                               ???

                              Grrrrr....
                              Let's try again.
                              Open HJT, and checkmark:
                              O23 - Service: SupportSoft Sprocket Service (dellsupportcenter) (sprtsvc_dellsupportcenter) - SupportSoft, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtsvc.exe
                              Click "Fix checked".
Restart computer, run HJT again, and see, if the entry is still there.

                                Ditto on the Grrrrrrr   ???

I reran the HJT and the log is attached below.  I see the file you mention but when I look for it in the HJT program with the boxes, it isn't there.  I can't copy the program output to show you.  I don't know why but that is really wierd that the log file show it but the main program doesn't.

I see the file you mention but when I look for it in the HJT program with the boxes, it isn't there.
How about YOU, posting an old log, over, and over?....LOL

I guess when I left click to run HJT it runs but shows me an old run.  I right clicked on the shortcut and ran it as an administrator to get a new run.  I did not see the line you mentioned.

                                  The current file is below.

                                  It's better now.
You still have couple of other entries from Dell Support, so let's get rid of them.
                                  Open HJT, and checkmark:
                                  - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DellSupportCenter] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P DellSupportCenter
                                  - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupportCenter] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P DellSupportCenter
                                  Click "Fix checked" button.

Post fresh HJT log (make sure, it's the newest one).

2 entries deleted.  Search command found nothing containing "Dell".   New HJT log below.

When I start to debug the downstairs kids computer what approach do you recommend?  I think a new thread makes sense as it is a different computer with Windows XP professional OS.  The main problem is internet connectivity is ok sometimes and other times it goes away.

Thanks for all your help.   :) :)

                                        One last thing.

When I watch a video on the internet (i.e. news video or YouTube) that is shorter than 1 minute it loads and plays fine.  For videos longer than 1 minute the play catches up to what has been buffered and it stops.  The video shows it is working but no additional data is buffered in and the video doesn't finish playing.

                                        Any thoughts on this?

                                        Thanks.

                                            IE 7.0.6001.18000

                                            Firefox version 3.0.5

I tried each of these browsers and short videos load but ones longer than 1 minute get hung up.

                                            Uninstall Flash, using this: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
                                            Install fresh copy.

I installed Flash player from the recommended site.

The videos play a little longer but still hang up after about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

                                                 ???

Sure did and rebooted the computer and reran uninstall Flash.

Then installed the new flash player.

I tried temporairly lowering the firewall setting to see it it made any difference.  No change and put the firewall setting back where it was.

Could there be a streaming conflict with another media player.  I have looked around but not sure how to determine if there are conflicts.  Just a thought.

Well if you ask me, the whole problem is in the "IE". This is synonymous for "Doesn't work"

                                                      I'm not going to read the entire topic because I'm lazy and the word "IE" sends shivers down through my spine;

Did you try Firefox? Or Firefox portable if the former doesn't work.

                                                          Broni and others.

I reset the Belkin wireless G router and the internet has been working great for a week.  Knock on wood!
