That reminds me... all my Windows 3.0 floppy disks are shot... sat for too long.
    They ware too easily.

Anyways, last time, a few months ago.

My server has a floppy drive in it. On my old server, I had boot device selection issues... I had to use a boot manager that ran on a floppy to boot from the CD drive, otherwise it would just boot to whichever hard drive could boot.

I keep the floppy around just in case. The "new" used server doesn't need it.

About four months ago to install Raid. Intel sends it as a floppy. I had to buy a USB floppy to install it.

I can't remember the last time.  I'm sure it's been several months but I think probably not over a year.

Besides slow transfer speeds, I found that floppies were unreliable, since they only lasted so long.
I would often MEGA COMPRESS! my floppies to the extreme, tripling their size (to about 3MB).
This is awfully hard on a floppy, as you can imagine.

Then I got a 37MB flash drive. The speed alone made me forget floppies. Also, the 37MB flash drive worked with my Macintosh, so I could get updates on it.

A few years from now, people will be wondering why we use a floppy icon for the "Save" button in word processors and other programs...

"What the heck is that supposed to mean?"

My cousin still has some 5 1/2" floppies... I only have one. Though, I remember when I was in elementary school... we had computers from the late 70's (Apples)... they had the old floppy drives.

It was last month when I was reformatting an old Compac PC. For some reason that was the only way I could install the operating system by using 6 floppy set up disks that I download from Microsoft. I tried using my Windows XP CD but the PC would not recognize the cd drive until I used the floppy's. The PC is up and running fine..

I use almost every week, to do the logical partition image, turning the ghost by the floppy drive.

               ;)

              5 1/4", not 5 1/2". not that it really makes a difference.

there were 8" floppies before them, too.

EDIT: oops, almost forgot my addition to the Poll.

I believe I used one in the last month, as I recall copying a Doom2 wadfile from my PC to my DOS/win31 laptop. I use them pretty often, but as Zylstra says, they go bad fairly quickly.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
