    windows xp failing to start
    « on: January 06, 2009, 07:31:18 PM »
im pretty sure that i have to erase my hard drive and re load everything on it but thought i would check to see if there is any possibe way to save everything and not do that.

a couple of days ago i was running my virus scan to see if there was something that was causing my laptop to run very slow. the only thing dected was an adware infection that was listed as not a threat. i did not have the option to remove the file from my computer, only to quarantine or ignore the threat. so i decided to quarantine it thinking it would stop everything. so i clicked quarantine and got a message saying to windows needs to restart in order to complete operation. after the restart my computer booted up fine as usual. then as i clicked to check for updates for my antivirus software. this then brought up the mcafee home window which said several virus' had been dected. so i turned off my wireless connection and ran virus scan once more. after it was complete i deleted the infected files and restarted my computer.

now here's the problem. i cant access anything on my computer. i turn it on and the screen loads up from the toshiba screen through xp loading. it then loads up my desktop with nothing on it and sits there until computer is shut down. so the only thing that shows up is the wall paper. the computer doest freeze because im am still able to ctrl+alt+del to shut down. so i re-boot and press f8. with f8 i have tried ever single option and nothing works. i have tried safe mode and the screen just sits there black with safe mode in all the corners and service pack 3 across the top. same thing goes for safe mode with networking. the only option that does not just sit there black is safe mode with command prompt. the command prompt opens up and im able to use that but i dont know if there is a way to attempt to fix it using command prompt.

if anyone knows anything that will help i would appreciate it very much.
    thank you...

One option would be to grab one of these:

This will allow you to remove the drive before formatting/reinstalling and hook it up as a slave drive in any desktop machine and copy/burn your important data...
'Bout 8 Bucks at any PC store.

        Yes.
Scan any files prior to copying/moving them...
