I have to carry my computer case to college.....
    « on: January 09, 2009, 12:20:35 AM »
For some reason I need to take my computer case to college cause my teacher has to Install something in it, I Have to take it with me and I don't have any other choice, but I don't want Him to wander through my folders etc, I have decided to keep only a few Icons on the desktop rest I will put away somewhere, Could someone please tell me how to make my folders or a Drive or something un-accesable or invisible to him,I mean he should not have any access to them (specially my pictures, which are too many).

Does anyone have any Ideas about what I should do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou.

Can't you just dump everything in a hidden folder? How computer-literate is he?

do you have XP pro? if so you can create a encrypted folder, and store it all in there.

it's only accessible to your user account. So, you create another account for him to use to do whatever he needs to do, and just don't tell him the password for yours.

Or, you can move them to an external drive.

Or... zip up the important files with a password, and unzip when you get it back.

good, good; I'd go for an Encrypted folder myself.

I recommend Backing the important stuff up as well; in the unlikely event that something happens to your user profile in the meantime (without the profile, you would never be able to access the files again, and we wouldn't want that)

forgive me if you already know how to make an encrypted folder, I'm just adding these steps to save time for if you don't ;)

make a folder, and move all the stuff you don't want Mr. Nosey to see (lol) into it.

Right Click the folder, and under "attributes" click the "advanced..." button.

select "encrypt Folder to secure data".

        Press OK.

this part can take a while, depending on the size and number of files you have.

Once completed, the folder should show up in green from within windows explorer.

Now, since you don't want them to accidentally or purposely access the files, you'll need to make a new profile with which your teacher can perform the necessary stuff they need to do.

Also, if you don't have one already, put a password on your account (the one you used to encrypt the files).

Now the files are only accessible when logged on under that profile.

They can still be deleted, though, which is half the reason I suggested a back-up.

I will read the steps and do as you said.

          Thankyou so much!!

Are you sure after doing all those steps he won't see all those folders?

he will see the folders, but trying to open any files will show an access denied error.

I'm not 100% positive wether it's possible to look inside a encrypted folder, though. I remember reformatting one time, and upon trying to copy some of my old data back, I found it was encrypted with the old account and thus unaccessible... I believe I was able to access and view the folder contents, though, just not any of the files therein.

LOL, if you wanted to be really evil, you would make some empty pictures with paint and encrypt them, and rename them to stuff that looks incriminating against him, lol.

          "Mr.Nosey buying crack.jpg"
"hidden camera in Mr.Nosey's House capture 01.jpg"

heh, then you'll know if you looked in the folders, since he'll be nervous and agitated.
Depends how much you like this teacher, though.

I don't like him at all but I'd still like good grades, so I'll stick to the access denied message.

You know If I make another user account then will the software that he installs be only available through that account?

Sorry If I confuse you, Its just very important to me.

Well, that depends what he's installing. Most programs provide the option to install for "this user only" and "for all users".

another thing you can do is create the new account and encrypt them under that one, then they will install under your account-and you can decrypt them again in the temporary account.

after encrypting your important documents, they should be green, such as those shown in the picture:

I don't know if I should make another user account, cause it will look odd askin him to access only one account and then giving him the password and then asking him to make the software available to all users, it will look very dramatic of me.

Shall we Zip up my folders or lock them BC?

ok, you could just zip'em all up with a password.

I thought you were going for dramaticism, though  ;D

The truth is I just don't like drama at all, I just get really hurt if I feel people hurt me intentionally , and then it gets very dramatic.

                How to zip them up?

                 :o

well, I actually don't know if the built-in archiver with XP supports it; I recommend PowerArchiver, but since that isn't free anymore, I'd have to say 7-Zip.

It's not really important what format you compress it to, what's important is setting the password.
