    Ram problems with vista.
    « on: January 21, 2009, 08:14:28 AM »
Very recently my RAM usage shot up. I only have 1 gb but its a laptop so its really not that easy to get more. I can't figure out what program is useing it all but its constantly using about 650-730 mb of ram. Does anyone have any recomendations for fixing this?

Vista utilises RAM very differently than previous Windows versions...it will gobble up what's there most times.
Is the laptop running OK ? ?

No its running horrible. The internet has basically stopped working, i can't open more than one program no matter how small, and it used to run WoW just fine, and that uses 512mb by its self.

What protections are you using against viruses and spyware?  Do you have a maintenance routine, using Windows Disk Cleanup or a third-party tool such as CCleaner, for cleaning up temporary files, etc?

Do you still have all the miscellaneous software that the manufacturer installed in your computer when it was new?  If so, read this: http://adrynalyne.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!AB9DE24BE9AF1B9F!303.entry and heed it's advise.

I have windows defender... i do disk cleanups and defrags all the time i'm considering doing a format, but if i do, will it restore to exactly how it was when i got the computer? because the computer came with certain programs on it already, and i really don't wanna lose those.

Open the "Computer" folder so see what drives it shows.  If you have a recovery partition, it will appear there, probably as drive D.

... will it restore to exactly how it was when i got the computer?
Yes, it should be the same configuration as when new.

My Compaq Presario notebook PC has a folder named Recovery Manager on the All Programs menu.  If I open that folder, it has a menu item, also named Recovery Manager, which will start the recovery tool.  I believe this may vary among different brands of computers, but that's how mine is set up.

Keep in mind a full restore will erase all your files, so backup everything you want to keep before proceeding with this.  If you want to save email messages, email account setups, browser bookmarks/favorites, etc., in addition to other files, you'll need to include them, too.  You'll need to backup to an external media, such as CD, DVD, flash drive, or external hard drive.

...its constantly using about 650-730 mb of ram.
                I think that's normal for Vista. :-\

Vista's a massive memory hog.  I've heard of it using up to a Gig of RAM, just sitting there without any program running!

yeah, it's much better to keep as much physical memory free as possible. Most data access should occur through slow hard disk reads rather then be precached into low priority deletable pages of physical RAM for quick access. What's the point of buying, say 2 or 4 gigs of RAM if the computer isn't even gonna use it intelligently?

                  Yes. Exactly.

Vista uses it far more intelligently then XP ever did. XP essentially tried to keep as much RAM free as possible. THIS IS A BAD THING. that memory that was so expensive sits unused half the time, using up electricity unnecessarily. Vista uses SuperFetch, which caches often used data (programs, files, anything, really). Although my the strictest definition, this RAM isn't "used" at all, since the moment another application requests memory and there is none available, SmartFetch purges less-often used entries from the cache. So even though it says that the RAM is used... it won't be the moment an application requires that "used" RAM, so it isn't used except by the tightest definition.

I'm going off its performance, and how much ram its useing. It couldn't have been using 700mb since i got it, because it could run WoW before and that uses 512 mb. I'm gonna run the program broni suggested, and get back to you guys.

                          ok
1st 95% you can add ram you just have to look at book or look up your system see how much ram you hold.

2nd task manager will show you under the tab process which is running like crazy. Most the time its idle but that shouldnt affect you :)

3rd  after you find the program thats running alot you can end task it but make sure its just a program trying to run not any windows components etc. Always check folder its in.

also i see you have toolbars running there really not necessary an can be shut off in the browser view area. Not sure if you use them but no need for those runnin. Hope some of this may help you!

After seeing the HJT log, I'd say the slowness is probably caused by a combination of a few factors:
                          1. Low RAM (Vista likes 2GB); I don't know, what processor you have, but Vista likes dual core
                          2. Norton = hog
                          3. Number of unnecessary startups.

No. Dr. Web doesn't give you real time protection.
                            Your free choices are:

                            - Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
                            - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

                            - free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

                            - free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

To uninstall Norton, use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Why not? What brand, and model is it?

its an HP pavillion dv 6000...

I think thats what you want right?

I've just always heard its near impossible to add ram.

                                Good news!
                                According to this: http://crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Pavilion%20dv6000%20Series
you have two RAM slots, and each can hold up to 1GB (2GB total).
                                $11.99 per 1GB is basically free :)

Your manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035677.pdf, shows you how easy it's to replace RAM (chapter 5-6). Just two screws:

                                      OK. Here you go...

                                      1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

                                      2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

                                      3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (no actual program will be removed):

                                      - O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

                                      4. Click on Fix checked button.

                                      5. Restart computer for the changes to take effect.
