    vista errors/oxc0000098/ntoskrnl.exe
    « on: February 15, 2009, 04:57:06 PM »

I installed SP1 via my normal scheduled updates, as i have been doing since
installation. When the system rebooted, there was an error
, so i now cannot boot my computer. I get the following message:-

    File:   ntoskrnl.exe
    Status: 0xc0000098

Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt.

It will not even start by last known good configuration or safe mode.

Using the repair option on the install disc, brings this back to repaired state but after another automatic update it goes back to the same condition where i have to do this same thing all over again then it updates again and the problem cycles on

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You're saying, it happens every time, you install SP1?

    Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

OK. It took a while, because of number of dump files.
It looks like we have some serious issues here.
Basically, each crash lists different system file being at fault:
      csrss.exe
      volsnap.sys
      ntkrpamp.exe (3)
      Ntfs.sys
      win32k.sys
      svchost.exe
      ecache.sys (2)

We either have some serious system files corruption, or some hardware problem.
      Let's start with some tests:
      1. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
      2. Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Tool-t177564.html

i'm sorry ive been to these sites but dont know which or what exactly to download from the lists, also i ran a memory test from my computer and it said all was fine, i have had an e-mail from microsoft asking me to perfom these tasks but dont feel confident that i know what i'm doing

Note: A computer may store more than one copy of Windows Vista. Please highlight the one which encounters issues. The order of the items in the dialog-box is identical with the one on the boot menu.

        5. In the dialog box titled "System Recovery Options", click "Command Prompt" and run the following commands:

        cd    C:
        del   C:\windows\system32\drivers\pcmcia.sys*
        del   C:\windows\system32\drivers\1394bus.sys
        del   C:\windows\system32\drivers\ohci1394.sys
        del   C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\pcmcia.infblablabla*
        del   C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\1394.infblablabla
        del   C:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\sdbus.infblablabla*
        del   C:\windows\inf\sdbus.inf*
        del   C:\windows\inf\sdbus.PNF*

By performing these steps, the personal profile on the hard drive will not be affected

An email from Micro$oft? M$ doesn't send any emails. You need to tell us more about that email.
        As for tests...
...did you run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Tool-t177564.html?
...hard drive test...I'll help you out here, but we need to know, what hard drive you have...

        Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

Print it out, read couple of times, proceed slowly, and I assure you, it won't be complicated.
You may try it, or spend some bucks in computer shop. It's up to you.

well after several attempts this was a failure i got as far as burning the diagnostic material onto disk to boot system but after switching of computer then back on with the disk in the drive nothing happened, it just started up into windows, LOL....looks like I'm gonna be spending Bucks at the shop.

              You're doing fine.
You need to access computer BIOS, and change boot order, so CD drive is listed before hard drive.

                No, no.
What computer brand, and model is it?
When you start the computer, at the bottom of the screen, you'll see:
Press some key to enter setup
You have to press THAT key to enter BIOS.

                You'll see something like this:

Then you'll have to find boot section:
