    Is Vista any good?
    « on: March 09, 2009, 08:21:41 PM »
I have been waiting to switch from XP to Vista until I heard that it has become a reliable system.  I have been hearing from users and checking internet surveys and I still get the impression it is not a very good system.
Will you give me an objective viewpoint on this subject?

    Please, post some computer info:
    - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
    - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Looks good enough. Make sure to run clean install, not an upgrade.

Are you running a 64-bit OS? If not then it's likely you have more RAM then this is showing.

I Originally reformatted my laptop and setup a dual-boot between XP and Vista over 4 months ago... and I can count the number of times I booted XP on one hand.

Are there 64 bit versions of windows?  That is true, I actually have 4 gigs of ram installed but am restricted to 3.5 by the os i guess.  I don't have experience using dual operating systems.  What is the advantage of this?

Yes Vista does have a 64 bit version. It works well and most everyone here will tell you to go for it. Just do a full install and not a upgrade and you will be fine.

One last thing....check your hardware for drivers before you to the install. I find it handy to download and than burn them onto the DVD. This way you have them handy for the install.

          Why?
          Great question.
          Since :
          A) 7 hasn't been released yet...
          B) It will take time to work out it's issues as well as it did Vista and all other major OS releases
          C) It sounds like more of an opinion than a solution.

the guy was looking for an objective opinion I gave him one, and like i said WAIT for windows 7, VISTA  has a lot of compatability issues with software aswell as hardware, windows 7 (beta) is been test driven at the minuet and it is the opinion of a lot of beta testers to be a far better os than vista...... ;D

Patio:  windows 7 is more like an upgrade then a new operating system.  As we all know, Vista is packed with bugs and issues, but windows keeps saying that windows 7 will be more of a gigantic update than an upgrade.  So the bugs ~should~ be all worked out.  At least this is what I have heard....

Of course... none of these were substantiated at all. They were just the tech web-sites echoing what the people wanted to hear.

Honestly the only problem I've had with vista is that it makes me write more robust code. Not a bad thing at all. Additionally those "issues" I have encountered were easily remedied via a tweak of some form... just as with previous windows versions.

And of course the company is "Microsoft" not windows. But let's pretend that was a typo  :P

If the computers don't meet Vista requirements, they surely lag.
Windows 98 with 32MB of RAM will lag too.

If money is no object to you, then get Vista.  Personally, I have like it a lot.  I like the overall look the best, the Aero them I believe it's called.

I have never understood all the criticism it gets.  When I think about it, I have not had any problems with Vista at all, at least not anything regular or out of the ordinary.  The only thing I can think of that bothers me is how Windows Explorer will not remember the window view for folders (i.e., change a folder to view its contents in "Details" mode and next time you open it up, the same file displays contents as icons).  So *censored* frustrating.  No matter what you do, even selecting the options to remember folder view, nothing can fix this.  However, Windows XP has the exact same problem, so it's a wash.

Granted, I do take good care of my computer (learned a bunch of good stuff from this site actually).  Have good anti-virus and firewall.  Run defragmenter, disk cleanup, Malwarebytes, and CCleaner at least once a week.  And most importantly, I stay far away from Limewire and similar sites.  I do use my computer a lot though, have just one laptop--use it for work and personal at home, so I am on it probably an average of 10 hours a day.

On the other hand, if money is a major concern, as it always is for everybody (including myself), then it is not a bad idea to hold off on Vista and just get Windows 7 when it comes out.  However, I think Vista is worth the money.  I am not sure of the exact prices, but generally, I think a Vista upgrade package will set you back $175.  Keep in mind, however, that the price of Windows 7 upgrade from Vista will be cheaper than the upgrade package from Windows XP.  I am guessing probably $50-$100, so that should factor into the decision.  For $75, Vista is definitely worth it in my opinion.

                    Every OS has its problems.
Then, M$ introduces new OS every few years, so it's quiet normal.

                    98 to Xp - 3 years
XP to Vista - 5 years
Vista to Win 7 - most likely 4 years

Well, is it like going from XP to Vista or is it like going from XP to XP service pack 1?

It's like from XP to Vista. Win 7 is a brand new OS, however Win 7 is much more similar to Vista, than Vista is to XP.
