trying to fix Master Boot Record in XP
« on: March 18, 2009, 07:47:05 PM »
I had Ubuntu and XP dual booted on the same hard drive.  I went into Disk Management in Windows and deleted the Ubuntu partition.  But when I reboot the computer it says "Error 22".

I've had this problem before when I dual booted Ubuntu with Vista and I was able to fix the problem with this command:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

But this is not working with XP.  I insert the XP installation disk and select the command prompt and try the same command and is doesn't work, it only says, "bad command or file name".

what am i missing here?

thanks

Dusty

You used Bootrec in Vista, it appears not to be available in XP..

See KB314058

Good luck.

Boot to the XP CD and enter the recovery console.

Run the fixboot and fixmbr commands.

That seems to be the problem I'm having... When I insert the installation disk, there is NO "repair" option.

The only options I have are:  "Restore Windows XP"    and    "Boot to command prompt using CD-ROM"

If I select "restore win XP" it wants to completely reinstall.  The other option brings me to an  A:\ prompt.....

Try this

Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Now get to the root directory of C by typing: cd\
you should now just see a standard C prompt
Now execute the fixboot and fixmbr commands

EL   EXCELLENTE` !!!    ;D

Just don't ask if that is a real word....lol

Anyway, it worked..............thanks much

Apparently my OEM installation disk does not include the repair console.  If it does I have no clue how to access it.

You have not got a full retail Windows install disk. These are the ones that have the Recovery Console and repair options built in. What you have got is a manufacturer's recovery disk, which contains a prepared "image" of a fresh install for that model PC, and the software necessary to write that onto your hard drive.
