Voted Yes, since being a web developer requires you test and run all browsers. Still going to remain a FF user since based on the overview don't see many things that impress me and FF has IE beat in plugins.

Official IE8 download at:

I'm surprised half of you would since it's still considered buggy and after the post made prior to this.

ie8 is not really buggy. it looks better than ie7 visually but FF is still the default

Chrome is not bad, but it's just needs more time to work as it's still new but I like chrome's sandboxed feature though. Malware or security issues can't be deployed easily that way.

I voted yes...though FF is my default, as well.  I still have to use other browsers like IE, Opera, Safari so that I can test these against new additions to my site.

...anyway, I need to stay current, too.

i wished there was a megabrowser for developers. All the browsers stuck into one app so that website developers only have to run their pages once through the megabrowser app to get the results from all the major browsers to see them all at once.

I have tried the beta versions and had some issues (slow downs, lock ups, ect) which were too numerous to make a reliable web browser IMO. I will try it again in a month or so and see how it goes then. Give it some time to work the bugs out.

I have tried the beta version and it is pretty good.  It does crash on me quite a bit more than IE7 or FF though.

You can have them in tabs all you have to do is press ctrl+t to open up new tabs on IE8.

IE8 has a pop up blocker and a phishing filter and a privacy filter and also a smart down loader that scans downloads to see if a download is safe or not and see if it has been reported

Yep, it even has a compatibility mode so if a webpage that doesn't support IE8 yet you can click the compatibility mode and it will make the site think it is IE7 or older. It will even fix sites that the pictures don't show up right.

I won't use IE8. I downloaded it the other day, took 30 minutes and then it didn't work correctly, real slow. My computer is an old dell P3, maybe that was the problem. I removed the program went back to IE7.

I guess there never will be a best overall browser. I have about 5 different browsers on the desk top, which one I use depends on what I'm doing at the time, it's a pain.

Thanks for the post. I use only one browser at a time. Are you saying because I have the other browsers on the desktop, that effects IE8?

IE 7 doesn't seem to care how many browsers are on the desktop. It works fine.

Or maybe its because your computer is not fast enough to support IE8 and those five other browsers.

My max memory cap, is 512mb. When I first got his old computer, there were two memory modules, 64 mb and 128 mb. I replaced the 64 mb with a 256mb a few weeks ago, It really improved the performance. I haven't replaced the 128, yet.  Memory at the moment is 384 mb. Is there a minimum memory spec for IE8? that is interesting.

if you're not even running 512 mb of ram, I really doubt how well your computer performance actually is. I consider most computer to need at least 512mb of ram at minimum to be anywhere good.

Are you saying the internet speed would have been the same before the up-grade? All I know is before the up-grade, FF would get real slow, performance wise, I call it speed. A message would pop-up with FF saying virtual memory too low. I didn't get that message with IE. After I up-graded the memory, no more virtual memory message from FF, all the browsers worked better, faster, performance wise. Internet speed and performance aren't the same thing????? thanks

But to say that firefox runs slowly before memory upgrade? That's just your ocmputer being more responsive.

You can't change internet speed by increasing amount of memory you got but you can by adding moire memory, improve responsiveness of programs,

internet speed is same regardless of computer if there's nothing on pc that inhibits the internet data coming in like a program or something. But to say that firefox runs slowly before memory upgrade? That's just your ocmputer being more responsive.

You can't change internet speed by increasing amount of memory you got but you can by adding moire memory, improve responsiveness of programs,

Thanks for the reply, so if the computer is running slow speed-wise, that isn't a memory issue? Some browsers don't run faster than others? I know how to check internet speed, but, not the speed of anything else.

                                                                        x2543

YEAH ... well, if two computer connect to same internet individually (no router, no internet sharing) then you should be able to get about same internet speed, given no malware or other crap slowing down internet for some reason. this means that for same browser on both pc's, you with same configurations, you should be able to access same webpages at about same speeds.

Now, if you're lacking memory for pc, your computer will be slow and applications will load slow. That has nothing to do with internet connection speed.

But to say some browsers are slower than others, well you can tweak browsers for faster speed, you can see how much CPU % it's using.

I did try it, couldn't get it to work right, probably my old computer or I just did something wrong? I did see a minimum memory spec some where for that system, don't know how accurate, 512mb ram, I'm not running much, 384.

if you're worried, make a system restore point (assuming windows xp, vista or if you're testing windows 7) before installing so you can roll back if you need to (if the normal uninstalling of ie8 browser to go back to previous version not working well)

for XP uncheck and click the + and then check "do not show again"

they want to force people to use it

You don't have to use it, and probably that would make the computer more secure, in that you're getting the latest IE updates from MS and thus thwarting possible hacks and cracks via the IE. But win 7 allows you to disable IE so that it doesn't work on your pc until you re-enable it.
