and almost every time i turn on my computer it starts a weird disk check which takes forever
and half the time after i log on, instead of the above images, the evil blue screen will pop up and say that Windows encountered an error and must close, and starts a dump of physical memory

anybody have any idea what the problem might be? thanks a lot for any help!!!
let me know if any more information is needed

Try this:
Unplug ALL USB things.
Start up the PC and tap on the F8 key.
Boot into save modem if you can.

It maybe your HDD is failing.
Can you borrow or buy another?
Do you have the original install CD? You may need it.

What model is you Dell desktop? How old is it?

my comp is a 3+ year old (LOL) Dell Inspiron 1300 (a laptop), XP Home SP2

yes i thought either dying hard drive or virus/malware/spyware, etc., just wanted to ask around a make sure, ya know?

tak moge, but only after i do a repair install
then, if i shut down, and then turn back on to log on again, the same problems occur, and i must do the whole repair install process over again to be able to get into an account

u put in the XP disk and when it prompts u what u want to do, u hit ENTER to continue the process...do u know what i'm talking about

Basically.
You need to know, what is the manufacturer of your drive, first.
Go to Device Manager (while in Safe Mode), and see, what it says under Disk Drives
Let me know, and we'll go from there.

Now, you need to know, if it's SCSI, or IDE drive (two different tools). Device Manager should tell you.

Actually, I just read all info, and only first tool can be run from bootable floppy, and the other one ([SDIAG] SCSI Diagnostic Tool ) has to be run from within Windows.
I propose, you first try Hitachi tool (Drive Fitness Test): Download Drive Fitness Test Windows Diskette Creator v4.15 b01 (12.16.2008) (Direct Link)
It will create bootable floppy.
You can create the floppy on another computer.
Put the floppy into bad computer, and restart it.

by floppy do u mean disc? cuz the bad computer is a laptop...

You have to boot from that floppy disk.
You put the disk in, and you restart computer.

OK. Do you have floppy drives on both computers? Bad one, and good one?
If so, when you run Drive Fitness Test Windows Diskette Creator, it'll ask you to insert floppy disk to create bootable floppy.

It may be something wrong with floppy drive, then.
Let's try to create bootable CD, then.
Use 3rd Hitachi link: Drive Fitness Test v4.15 b01 (12.16.2008) - CD Image
You have to burn downloaded dft32_v415_b01.iso file to blank CD.
To do so...
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn dft32_v415_b01.iso to a CD on good computer
Boot the bad computer to the CD...let it finish loading.

ok i ran the drive scanner, and nothing bad came up
i did an advanced scan and also the quick scan
afterwards, i clicked on Drive info, and the S.M.A.R.T. status said GOOD and everything else seemed to look ok

While in Safe Mode....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Were you able to boot into Normal Mode?

did not work

the same problems occurred, and i had to do the repair install
but at least now i'm back on the computer

ok i'm pretty certain that degragging my computer really messed it up
it makes sense that files are missing or not found, and it can't load my accounts in normal mode

is there any way to be certain of this? can i somehow undo a defrag?

Defragging is highly unlikely reason for any computer problem.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.flyupload.com/, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
(this applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc")
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries (Values) on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

but sounds like that's all i got now
3+ years man, it's about time i clean it up

what are the chances i got a virus? cuz i don't want to back up on my external hard drive and spread it to other information
