Not Sure If My Browser Is The Problem
    « on: April 11, 2009, 03:06:59 PM »
Hey Guys, I'm having a problem getting into a site that I am a member of. Recently the site went down for maintenance and I thought is was down all week because each time I clicked onto it from my Favorites I got the message that the site was "UNDER MAINTENANCE"...in fact I still get that msg.

My problem is I am using the same browser I have been using IEor AOL Explorer. So could someone please go into the site and try to find out why I can't bring it in?

Now, I also want to know about browsers. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, i AM NOT COMPUTER SAVVY. I'm willing to be taught but I'm nowhere near up on my computer tech.

    So with that in mind:

    1) How many browsers can you have on your computer at one time?

    2) Do browsers adjust to fit the task if you have more than one, or must you select?

    3) Do browsers clash with each other, causing damage to your machine?

    4) What is the basic difference between Firefox and IE?

    5) How much space does a browser usually use?

    6) Will I need to RESTART my computer after loading Firefox, IF, I load it?

    7) What else do I need to know before deciding to download Firefox?

Here is the link to the site...thanks

    1) How many browsers can you have on your computer at one time?

    A) As many as you want.

    2) Do browsers adjust to fit the task if you have more than one, or must you select?

    A) Not sure what this means but whatever browser you launch is the one you will be using.

    3) Do browsers clash with each other, causing damage to your machine?

    A) No.

    4) What is the basic difference between Firefox and IE?

    A) Not much...but security FF wins hands down. It depends on personal preference.

    5) How much space does a browser usually use?

    A) As much as it needs to be installed.

    6) Will I need to RESTART my computer after loading Firefox, IF, I load it?

    A) It's advisable to restart the machine after any major software install.

    7) What else do I need to know before deciding to download Firefox?

    A) Nothing...go for it.

What does this reply mean? Are you saying different machine may require more space? Doesn't the browser have a set size?

      6) Will I need to RESTART my computer after loading Firefox, IF, I load it?

Did you try going into the site? is it my browser that is keeping me out? But shouldn't my browser, no matter what is is bring the site in, even if it is problem laden?

It would seem that a browser would need about 10 Mega Byes for its own basic needs. But it may request more memory to do a task.
I just now put up about four ot five browsers, lost count. FireFox is a t 69 Mega Byres. Sea Monkey took only 19.9 MB. See below.
      Is that of any help?

Hi Geek-9pm, I appreciate what you guys are doing for me, but I still haven't seen where anyone said I went into that site and yes it's your browser. Maybe the site is just having problems. I don't want to load something I don't need.

BTW, now remember I said I'm not savvy about computers. I'm not really sure I have IE launched. Down in the tool bar near the START are a few icons one of which has in it: LAUNCH Internet EXPLORER BROWSER; AOL 9.1; and WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

So how can I tell if I have launched WMP and IEB I'm using AOL9.1 so I guess I can disregard that one. I do know that when I go to view a video on-line I must start it playing then stop/pause it at the 1 sec point, then let it buffer which could take anywhere from 20 mins. to an hour depending on the length of the video. Aren't you suppose to be able to see a video relatively as soon as you start it?

Please go through my statement and answer the questions so that I won't re-post them. I really need to know these answers.

        Thanks guys.

        Your questions were answered already...
If the site is having problems then there's nothing you can do on your end to fix it...

Hello Patio...and I'm sorry but I don't see where my question about the site was answered. All I know is that I cannot access this site when I was a week ago. And I don't like playing guessing games when it comes to something like this. And again, I did post the link to the site with hopes that someone would click it and maybe be able to tell me from having been in there and maybe posting to the owners if they changed the format or hardware or something.

Are you using Internet Explorer or Firefox???

I assume your using Internet Explorer although I'll give instructions for both.

IF you are using INTERNET EXPLORER

Open Internet Explorer click on TOOLS

            Click on Delete browsing history.

Delete Temporary internet files and Cookies.

            IF you are using FIREFOX

            Open Firefox click TOOLS

            Click Options

Click on the privacy tab find the Clear now button.
Clear the Cache cookies and temporary internet files.

Sorry to take so long responding when I asked for the help.  Umm...I know how to clear my files and cookies. I guess I do anyway...I click on programs, the IE, then Tools, then IO, then when the page opens DELETE, I then DELETE HISTORY, FILES & COOKIES,  I then go to ADVANCED tab and RESTORE, APPLY and YES then RESTART my comp.

That still doesn't tell me why I can't bring in a site I was bringing in a week ago. I did send the admins an email asking if they were getting msges about the matter from other members. And no there is no reason for them to ban me...so that's not on the table. Thank you for replying.

we're not going to the site- we don't need to.

If another browser can go to the site, then it's your browser. Chances are it's the site, not your browser.

browsers don't randomly decide, "hey, you know what, I'll pretend this site doesn't exist, just for kicks".

All browsers work essentially the same- they ask for something, and the server sends it.

and for the way, i have checked the site and it is working on my computer.

and yes, all browsers work the same in terms of grabbing the site so you can see it.

so then it is either the browser, or your computer.

unfortunately while I can use a different browser here it won't narrow it down on your end.

unfortunately, we won't know if that is the case if YOU don't try it on your own computer. 1 million people can check out the site to see it working but if it's not working for you, you gotta fix it if you want to go there.
