ps.. help me., i have a USB DTI/4GB,

It's probably busted, and if it was very cheap and you got it on Ebay, fake as well. Also, you should have started a new thread, instead of hijacking this one.

hallelulah praise the possum and his bumblebee disciples I have found the answer to the question I never intended to ask!

hallelulah! Salute the Suess! And so it was said that there was a cat and he did don a hat of far larger vertical proportions then his own cranium, and it didst look awkward, but he did then say to the goldfish, "how is thou sentient? And How dost thou breath of the oxygen in this air with ichthyological breathing apparatus?" To which the goldfish did reply, "because the Suess made be that way" Praise'd be the possum and his disciples! Drinketh of the holy lemonade and be merry, Suess Bless us all!

I bought one over Ebay and on the disk that came with it says "XCS" and the drivers do not support vista or win7.

This driver works for me too on win7:

I just registered to reply to this topic.

If you google 'USB2.0-Ser!' this is the top result.

These devices are commonly (and very cheaply!) available, and becoming more common as more and more systems are produced that don't have serial ports on them.

So thanks to Daniel for his very helpful response, and hopefully this helps explain why so many people are finding this topic useful.

        Cheers.

The bumps bring to the front page very important, existential questions:

          :/

I have no idea what people's issue is with this topic, but considering the number of views it has and it basically consists of someone asking a question, someone providing an answer and then forum regulars slating anyone who says thankyou.... well, it makes you look like a bunch of tools basically.

I definitely won't be using this forum again.

          :/

I have no idea what people's issue is with this topic
It's because the topic's progression resembles that of a certain pattern of spamming.

          Hi!

          I had the same problem.

A lot of spam starts out this way. Usually it will just say something like "tell me if you find a solution" and then say "BUY *SPAM*!" or whatever underneath as a spam link.

          Quote
I googled and found the solution here : http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic112380.html

So far so good- links to another forum where somebody found a solution. Notice however that the one post that provides t he relevant info is from another Poster with a single post. There is a pattern emerging.

Why would somebody spam forums with a link like this? Unless, say, the executables were infected. I don't doubt there was an original file that contained the drivers, but I would be highly suspect given the circumstances of wether the linked file truly is "safe".

One of the frequent posters there reposts the file as an attachment, for example; the attachment is 127K... the file on the linked url is a good 159K. One wonders what the extra space is from. (could either be from a different set of files entirely or the files are different... I'd check but I don't have a techspot account, oh well). It could of course be from an update or something. (I'd be inclined to believe that, as it appears to have x64 drivers as well)

Additionally, we have seen this ALOT. Although personally I didn't really see anything strange (call me a cargo cult poster, I suppose), nor do I believe it quite fits the pattern. Usually somebody will be both the person requesting help, and then they will also provide the "solution" via a spam link; then in order to make it seem more authentic they also post as other people who are saying how well it worked or thanking them. I don't think it meets this particular pattern because the link is not an "obvious" spam-link (a forum link and a link to a file) so unless the file is, say, infected (no idea, I don't think so) it's highly unlikely that's what happened here. It's just a very common behavioural pattern and unless somebody is watching and reading the topic very closely it's very difficult to tease apart the truth from the spam (in a sense). I now believe this is a fully legitimate topic

If in fact you people are really... not spammers... or something, and truly did need the driver and it now works, then excellent news! It's rather atypical to have a first and only time poster provide something so helpful and never return, is all, and the topic started to smell rather fishy.

googling for "USB 2.0SER" brings up quite a number of other forum posts. This forum post appears nowhere on the first page. (it does appear with a ! though), (I guess that is in the error msg...)

The name of the device is 'USB2.0-Ser!', with the exclamation mark.  That's how it shows up in device manager, in the bubble that pops up to say 'device did not install correctly' etc... I guess a lot of people do what I did and type that exact text (including the exclamation mark) into google.  This thread is the first result.

Anyway, for anyone else who gets here this way:

The driver given in this thread didn't work for me personally, although it is the 'correct' driver for this device.

The device is also known as a 'CH-340' (that's the name of the USB->serial chip I guess).

There's a thread here: http://www.davesdrivers.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=130 that has more drivers linked, but in all honesty this device is a POS and you should probably invest a little more in a better device based on something like the FTDI usb->serial chips.
