How do I create a shortcut with Mozilla Firefox?
    « on: April 22, 2009, 05:59:51 PM »
I know this is a stupid question: I switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox yesterday (I'm late, lol) and can't figure out how to create a shortcut. The right click --> Save Page As saves a copy of the page, not a shortcut to the page, and bookmark obviously only adds the link to favorites/bookmarks. The only way I have been able to create a shortcut is by copying the URL and pasting it into a new shortcut, but I assume there is a better way similar to the right click --> Create Shortcut of Internet Explorer. Note: I doubt this affects it, but it doesn't hurt to mention that I am using Windows XP.

Thanks anyone who can give me any help.

    CTRL D

Or you can simply drag the site's favicon to the bar below the address bar...
Actually Firefox has many more ways to create bookmarks...

Thanks, but that creates a bookmark, not a shortcut...

Right click on your desktop, New > Shortcut...type in the address you want (remember to add http:// if it doesn't start in www.) and it will save it as a URL file...

Thanks, but I am looking for a quicker way. (Also one that includes the icon like the IE way)

With FireFox's bookmark bar under the address bar why would you need desktop shortcuts to webpages ? ?
Anyways you can minimise FFox and just drag the favicon to the Desktop also...

        Steps:

        1. Click and hold onto the tab you want a shortcut to.
        2. Press WIN+D.
        3. Let go on your desktop.
        4. Rename to what you want (Optional).

BTW, the right click, Save Page As saves a copy of the page as opposed to a link to the page.

Yeah...because you save the page, not the link. And Patio was the one who basically gave the solution, I just added that it works for the whole tab, and the other options.

Default shortcut name is the page title.

Another simple way is to just drag a link from a page onto the Desktop or wherever you want it... ::)

Well, it's not completely the same as dragging the favicon, is it? The OP is looking for the most simple way to do it.

He could of just manually gone into the C drive->Program Files->Mozilla->Firefox.exe then just right clicked on the file and chose: Send to->Desktop[Create Shortcut]

I know it's been a long time since anyone posted a reply to this topic but I had the same question and eventually found what seems like a really good solution.

First make a copy of the main firefox icon/shortcut.  (I am using XP so I drag the shortcut to the desktop from where ever it is, while holding down the ctrl-key. )

Then right-click on it and choose "properties", and then choose the "Shortcut" tab.

In the target box you will see something like: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe".  At the end of the box, outside of the quotes, paste the url.   On the general tab rename the shortcut for convenience.

This gives you a shortcut that will open firefox even if IE is your default browser,  a feature I needed to test out websites.
