getting win98 display card to work
    « on: May 07, 2009, 05:01:25 PM »
    Hi
I know this is an old problem, but can someone help. I reformatted an old amd k6 pc with win98 on it. The problem is I can't change the display from 16colors to full color. The video card doesn't have a number on it, I  believe it is an evaluation card ( I got the pc off an engineer who has since moved away, so I can't ask him about it) I just like the way the machine worked, it's more of an hobby to get it working again. :)

since microsoft doesn't support Win98 anymore, you can't use Windows update....But you might try looking for and updated video card driver from some computer freak's website.....a driver that support more than 16 colors

download it, install it and restart

    try this:  http://www.driverskit.com/

look for a driver compatible with Win98

In system properties, click on display adapters. It should show you which card you have. System information on start up will show it as well. Knowing the make without a number to go with it may not help unless it uses a driver from Microsoft.

You can still use the Win98 scan and update feature from Microsoft, you just have to search the Microsoft site to find it as Windows update no longer work's from your computers direct link. I used it last week & downloaded one small update. I don't think the date on it was new, but it hadn't shown up in scans before.

AMD k6-2? any model number for the PC? built or manufactured?

Does the "add new hardware" wizard find anything?
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I ran Belarc pc advisor and it said that the dispay was:Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) [Display adapter]. which doesn't seem to help. I will try blockheads advice and try to install a win 98 compatible driver to see if that works.
          again thanx
