    Dual Operating Systems
    « on: April 29, 2009, 08:28:23 PM »
I was reading old posts & noticed that quite a few members have Win 98 on a partition. Does this mean that you can install Win98 & run old programs from a Win98 machine on a computer running Vista? I've been looking at the new Gateway's & they come with Vista 64 bit. I woulden't think the 32bit and 64bit would be compatable so I thought I would ask the experts.

I have a few old tractor cd's that I use quite a bit & it would be nice if they would work on a new machine. These are pretty much just pdf's with an index that takes you to a particular file when you click on it.

You can download Virtual PC from Microsoft. It will emulate any operating system that you have the install CD for. You can run Windows 98 on your Vista computer, without having to partition your drive. This is great for older programs that are not compatible with newer operating systems.

you can install ms-dos under virtual pc  :) Though I've never done it myself, it should give better compatibility than those Dos emulators like DosBOX

DOS is not supported under VPC...however with some tweaking you can get it to work.
        Win98 runs fine.

My compute boots a floppy and it runs MS-DOS just fine.
Or I can boot XP from the Hard Drive.
Or boot Ubuntu from a CD.
So there you have a three way bot up with not conflicts!
        AND --
I read somewhere you can boot XP from a Flash drive!

Exactly! Vista has some nice tools for this.
Just read the instructions first!   :o
Is that too hard to do?

I've installed windows vista, then installed ubuntu linux on an open new partition I created via windows vista disk management and it worked fine and the OS selection menu came up as it should. No conflicts, nothing.

Or better yet, triple boot on a mac, you got linux, windows and mac the three most popular OS's all natively running in their glory  :D
