DVDRW IDE1004 not playing!

My DVD drive won't recognise any CD or DVD I try.  The little green light flashes for about 2 seconds and i get the message 'please insert a disk'
I'm less than knowlegable about all this stuff and have tried all i can (updating drivers and firmware) any ideas would be hugely appreciated.
Go easy on the jargon though I'm new to this!
